Superangel is a Tallinn-based early-stage investor backing founders who turn breakthrough technology into global companies. Rooted in the Baltics and Nordics and now investing across Europe, it is a useful first call for science-led teams that need patient, hands-on capital before the market has fully caught up with them.

Investment thesis

Superangel focuses on deep technology: companies where a meaningful share of the intellectual property sits in science, technology or engineering innovation. Its second fund sharpened that focus further, targeting science-based and research-intensive businesses rather than me-too software. The firm argues that the region's collaborative, founder-led ecosystem is itself an advantage, and it deliberately surrounds portfolio companies with experts who can help on sales, finance and strategy.

Sectors and stages

The firm invests at pre-seed and seed, and invites approaches from founders building breakthrough technology from pre-seed to Series A anywhere in Europe. Its stated areas include artificial intelligence, robotics, energy, mobility, data and infrastructure, and its portfolio also spans defence and security technology, health technology and industrial software. Geography remains anchored in Estonia, the Baltics and the Nordics, with investments extending across Europe.

Fund size and cheque size

Superangel launched its first fund, worth €16 million, in 2018. Its second fund was announced at a €50 million target and had raised nearly €40 million by September 2024, when SEB pension funds joined as a key investor. The firm's own website now states first checks of €300,000 to €1 million, and it aimed to make about 40 investments from the second fund, roughly ten a year.

Notable portfolio

The team behind Superangel has collectively invested in more than 100 startups, including four companies reported to have reached billion-dollar valuations: Bolt, Veriff and Pipedrive from Estonia, plus Colombian delivery company Rappi. Its current portfolio also includes Starship Technologies, Montonio, Pactum, Rocsys, OTee and Spiral Hydrogen, alongside earlier exits such as Nordigen, acquired by GoCardless, and Pipedrive, acquired by Vista Equity.

Partners

Veljo Otsason is a general partner, and Marko Oolo is a partner at the firm. The general partners personally committed 10% of the second fund, and its anchor investors include SmartCap. Its limited partners include serial entrepreneurs and investors such as Grünfin founder Triin Hertmann and former Estonian president Kersti Kaljulaid, giving founders direct access to operators who have built companies in the region.

Programs, credits and perks

Superangel runs no named accelerator programme in the sources reviewed, and no standalone credits programme is publicly listed. Its distinctive perk is an expert network: it planned to tokenise up to 5% of the second fund's carried interest, through portfolio company Koos, to reward industry experts who work closely with portfolio companies. It also invites experienced operators to join as venture partners, so founders gain a bench of practitioners rather than capital alone.

How to apply for funding

There is no public application portal. Superangel publishes a direct route on its own website: founders building breakthrough technology, from pre-seed to Series A, are invited to contact the firm at [email protected]. Come with a clear account of the technical breakthrough, why it is defensible, and what the first check will prove, because deep-tech diligence will test the science before the sales plan.

Why it matters for founders

For deep-tech founders, Superangel funding offers a rare combination: a first cheque sized for long research cycles, a Nordic and Baltic network, and an expert bench that is paid to help, not just to watch.
