Relay Ventures is one of Canada's leading independent venture capital fund managers, investing in early-stage technology companies from offices in Toronto, Calgary and San Francisco. Founded in 2008, the firm has invested in more than 120 companies and exited more than half of them through acquisitions or public listings, a track record that makes it a useful first call for Canadian founders building software for fast-growing markets.
Investment thesis
Relay's original thesis was built around mobile: it focused exclusively on software for mobile devices and the connected internet, arguing that specialisation would give it networks and resources generalist funds could not match. That focus has broadened into four high-growth themes for its current fund: fintech, urbantech, property technology and sportstech. Across all four, Relay looks for passionate entrepreneurs who are disrupting or creating new markets through technology, and it backs them at the earliest stages, when its networks and operating help matter most.
Sectors, stages and fund size
Relay invests at the seed and Series A stages. Its current fund, Relay Ventures Fund V, which began investing in 2022, targets startups in finance, real estate, sports and gaming, and urban life. The fund's total size is not publicly disclosed, but Alberta Enterprise Corporation publicly invested US$10 million into Fund V in 2022, its second investment in the firm. An earlier milestone was Relay Ventures Fund III, a US$150 million fund closed in 2016. At that time the firm reported C$670 million under management and C$355 million invested in 76 companies. A standard cheque size for Fund V is not publicly disclosed.
Notable portfolio
Relay's portfolio includes some of Canada's best-known technology success stories. ecobee, the connected home and climate control innovator, was acquired by Generac, while theScore, the sports media company, was acquired by Penn National Gaming. Other notable names include TouchBistro, a restaurant customer experience platform, MobSquad, a Calgary technology talent services provider, Bird Canada, a leader in eco-friendly urban transportation, QuickPlay Media and Kira Talent. Fund V investments include Alberta fintech miQ, a savings and credit-building platform aimed at new-to-credit and new-to-Canada consumers.
Partners and support
Relay has a team of 19 professionals. Co-founder and managing partner John Albright led the firm through its mobile-focused funds, while managing partner Irfhan Rawji, who joined in 2016, leads its Alberta team and has championed Alberta as a Canadian tech hub. The firm's value-add is its specialised network: deep connections across mobile, fintech and urban technology, plus hands-on help winning customers and follow-on investors in both Canada and the United States. No published credits or perks programme was found, so founders should expect network and operating support rather than a standard perks bundle.
How to apply for funding
Founders can reach Relay through its website, relay.vc, or through introductions from Canadian ecosystem partners such as Alberta Enterprise Corporation, accelerators and co-investors. A strong pitch fits one of the firm's four themes, shows early evidence of product-market fit, and explains why the company can become a global champion from a Canadian base. Alberta-based founders should note Relay's active Calgary presence: the firm has repeatedly said it wants to help Alberta-headquartered companies scale globally, not just raise a first round.
Why it matters for founders
Relay Ventures combines Canadian roots with a US footprint and a record of 120-plus investments and majority exits, making it a strong early-stage partner for founders in fintech, urbantech, proptech and sportstech.
