Investment thesis

Porsche Ventures is the corporate venture capital unit of Porsche AG. Porsche's venture capital activities began in 2016 under Lutz Meschke, Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board for Finance and IT. The objective is strategic first, financial second: to give Porsche earlier access to business ideas and technology concepts and a sensor function for disruption beyond the sports car business.

According to Porsche's own reporting, the company has invested approximately EUR 300 million in 50 different start-ups, with an investment book value of just under EUR 400 million. Porsche plans to invest up to EUR 250 million more venture capital in the coming years, partly from profits of the first-generation portfolio. Since early 2023, the unit has operated largely independently from headquarters in Luxembourg.

Sectors, stages and cheque size

Porsche Ventures invests across four strategic fields: Car & Mobility, Intelligent Enterprise, Sustainability and Beyond. The unit backs new companies in their early and growth phases, with investments spanning customer experience, mobility and digital lifestyle as well as future technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain and virtual and augmented reality. A single dedicated fund size is not publicly disclosed; the EUR 300 million invested to date and the planned EUR 250 million are the public figures.

Notable portfolio companies

Other named investments include 1KOMMA5° (Hamburg cleantech), Group14 (battery-cell chemicals for Porsche's Cellforce Group), HIF Global (renewable eFuels), WayRay (augmented-reality head-up displays; Porsche was strategic lead investor in its 80 million US dollar Series C), Gapless (blockchain-based digital management of classic cars), Tactile Mobility, Nitrobox, Anagog, Miles, home-iX, VAHA, TriEye and Urgent.ly.

Between 2016 and 2022, described internally as the first generation, Porsche invested directly in 39 companies and financed the creation of 13 companies through Forward31, the company builder run by Porsche Digital; five investments have been sold, including digital parking service evopark and fleet-management specialist Fleetonomy. Porsche Ventures also invests in third-party funds, including e.ventures, Magma and Grove in Israel, and NIO Capital in China.

Leadership

Ulrich Thiem is Managing Director of Porsche Ventures, with Lutz Meschke as the executive-board sponsor. The relocation of the operational headquarters to Luxembourg in early 2023 underlined the unit's independence within the group.

Programmes and perks

Startups gain more than capital: access to Porsche's industrialisation expertise, marketing know-how and initial orders from industry. Forward31 builds companies with founders from scratch inside the Porsche Digital ecosystem, while the Porsche Executive Champions programme pairs each member of the Porsche Executive Board one-to-one with a start-up founder every quarter to exchange contacts and ideas.

Geographic focus

The programme is global, with activity concentrated in Germany/Europe, the United States, Israel and China, reached directly and through its fund investments.

How to apply for funding

Porsche Ventures does not publish an open application portal that could be verified. Founders historically reach the unit through the Porsche Digital and Forward31 ecosystem or through warm introductions via its fund and co-investor network, rather than through a public pitch form.

Why it matters for founders

With roughly EUR 300 million deployed across 50 startups and another EUR 250 million planned, Porsche Ventures is one of Europe's most active automotive CVCs. Its value is the industrial pathway: a strategic cheque can lead to supplier relationships, executive access and pilot orders inside one of the world's most profitable carmakers.
