Patron is an institutional seed fund investing in the gaming-native generation. Founded in 2021, the firm has raised $190 million across two funds — a $90 million Fund I and a $100 million Fund II — backed by a bench of venture all-stars including Andreessen Horowitz founder Marc Andreessen, Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan, SV Angel founder Ron Conway and Union Square Ventures co-founder Fred Wilson. For founders building at the intersection of games and consumer technology, Patron is one of the best-networked seed funds in the business.
Investment thesis
Patron invests across what it calls the "spectrum of play": it believes the gaming-native generation — people who grew up inside Roblox, Minecraft, Discord and League of Legends — will build and adopt the defining consumer products of the next decade. The firm's three partners combine cultural insight with real operating experience, and its bet is that gaming mechanics, aesthetics and technologies will reshape consumer categories from fitness and education to personal finance and fintech. As co-founder Brian Cho has put it, areas like education, personal finance, fintech and fitness are where gaming-adjacent companies like Duolingo, Robinhood, Strava and Zwift were built — and Patron wants to fund the next wave.
Sectors and stage
Patron is a seed-stage specialist. Its $100 million Fund II plans to allocate between $1 million and $4 million into 20 to 25 startups over roughly three years. Its first fund invested in 21 companies. The firm backs startups applying gaming technologies and game-design thinking to consumer verticals, including AI, Web3, fitness, education and fintech.
Notable portfolio
Patron's Fund I portfolio includes Altera, the AI company building digital humans, Kudos, the AI-powered smart wallet that grew to 200,000 users and closed an oversubscribed Series A led by QED Investors, Tonic Music, the live-streaming music-practice platform, and Raid Base, the sandbox gaming studio from the creators of VALORANT at Riot Games, which has drawn follow-on investment from Andreessen Horowitz and a top global game publisher. The firm's own site highlights newer partnerships including Board, Sweatpals and System Labs.
Partners
Patron was founded by Jason Yeh and Brian Cho, both co-founders and general partners. Yeh played a pivotal role in launching League of Legends at Riot Games, while Cho — previously on Andreessen Horowitz's investment team — helped launch VALORANT. They are joined by partner Amber Atherton, founder of a Y Combinator-backed startup acquired by Discord and author of "The Rise of Virtual Communities". Collectively their backgrounds span FirstMark Capital, Riot Games, Andreessen Horowitz and Discord.
How to apply for funding from Patron
Patron's official site — patron.fund — is the firm's front door, and the partners are also active public voices: they run the /all chat podcast on Apple Podcasts and YouTube, which is a useful window into how they think. The firm does not publish a formal application form, so founders should approach through its site or via warm introductions from the Patron portfolio or the Riot, Discord and a16z networks the partners come from. A pitch that speaks to the "gaming-native generation" framing — how game design, community or technology unlocks a consumer behaviour — will land better than a conventional sector pitch.
Why it matters for founders
Patron pairs a sharp gaming-consumer thesis with operator partners from Riot Games, Discord and a16z — and with $1–4 million seed cheques into 20–25 startups, it is a first call for any founder building for the gaming-native generation.
