OpenAI Startup Fund funding is the closest thing in venture to a kingmaker's stamp. The OpenAI Startup Fund invests early in a small number of startups "pushing the boundaries of how artificial intelligence can positively impact the world" — with stated focus fields of healthcare, law, education, energy & infrastructure, the sciences, plus AI productivity tools — making seed-through-early-stage "big early bets on a relatively small number of companies." For frontier-AI teams, this is the fund to know by name.
The distinctive structure
Legally OpenAI Startup Fund I, LLC — unusually, it was controlled by Sam Altman personally at launch (Altman gave up control in April 2024, per TechCrunch). The official About page is explicit: investors include Microsoft and other OpenAI partners, but "OpenAI itself is not an investor" — at least in Fund I. That is reportedly changing: in August 2026 the Wall Street Journal reported OpenAI raising a second vehicle of about $400m, with OpenAI itself as the sole investor. The live official figure is $175m committed (up from $100m at the 2021 launch), with SPVs layered on top (largest reported: $44.3m in 2024). A commonly cited ~$575m 2026 AUM figure could not be independently verified — treat it as unconfirmed.
Portfolio: the scoreboard
The first four announced investments: Descript, Harvey, Mem, Speak. The later public names are a who's-who of applied AI: Anysphere (Cursor — the fund led its $8M seed in 2023), Figure AI, 1X Technologies, Physical Intelligence, Born AI and Mimic Robotics. Harvey reached $11B in March 2026. We could not verify any India-specific portfolio company or India programme from credible sources.
The Converge programme
Converge is the fund's selective 5–6 week programme for engineers, designers and researchers building with AI. Each selected company received a $1M equity investment plus workshops, office hours and early model access; Converge 1 ran December 2022–January 2023 with about ten teams. The final week was in person in San Francisco, the rest remote, and no AI experience was required to apply. No open Converge cohort could be confirmed as of October 2026, so treat the programme as dormant until the fund says otherwise.
Leadership
Managing partner Ian Hathaway (ex-Haystack) runs the fund; OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap was fund manager at launch.
How to apply for funding from OpenAI Startup Fund
Here the honest route is refreshingly simple: the live official About page lists [email protected] as the contact — the fund runs an open intake, and a crisp cold email with a genuinely frontier-AI product gets read. There is no verified open Converge window right now — and the reported second fund may shift its shape, so do not pitch as if nothing changed since 2022. The bar is high: the fund makes a small number of big early bets on teams pushing AI's frontier in healthcare, law, education, energy and infrastructure, the sciences, or productivity. The open intake is geography-blind — a world-class technical team gets the same hearing anywhere. That is how to get funding from OpenAI Startup Fund: be frontier, be early, and send the email.
Why it matters for founders
Few signals matter more in AI than this fund's cheque: Harvey at $11B, Cursor, Figure AI. The thesis is narrow — frontier AI, high-impact fields, a small number of big early bets. If that describes you, the route is one email: [email protected]. If not, do not force the fit.
