If you are an Indian innovator with an idea but no prototype, NIDHI funding from the Department of Science and Technology could be your first cheque. The National Initiative for Developing and Harnessing Innovations (NIDHI) is the DST's umbrella programme for nurturing knowledge-based, technology-driven ideas into successful startups. Launched in 2016 by the Technology Translation and Innovation (TTI) Division, it scouts, supports and scales innovations with the goal of wealth and job creation.

Investment thesis

NIDHI is not a fund but a start-to-scale support system. It works through a network of incubators and program partners to take innovators from idea to prototype to seed-funded startup to investment-ready company. The emphasis is on indigenously developed innovations aligned with the AtmaNirbhar Bharat mission, and on building a vibrant innovation ecosystem connecting innovators, academia, mentors and incubators.

Sectors and stages

NIDHI is sector-agnostic and covers the full early journey: proof-of-concept, incubation, seed funding and acceleration. NIDHI-PRAYAS converts ideas into prototypes. NIDHI-EIR supports aspiring entrepreneurs with fellowships. NIDHI-Seed Support Program (SSP) provides early-stage seed funding. The NIDHI-Accelerator runs 3 to 6 month fast-track programmes for market-validated startups, ending in a demo day before investors. NIDHI-iTBI strengthens incubation in Tier II and Tier III cities.

Fund size and cheque size

NIDHI has no publicly disclosed fund size; it is a government umbrella programme, not a venture fund. What is public are the per-programme tickets: NIDHI-PRAYAS offers maximum funding support of INR 10 lakhs per innovator or startup for prototype development, plus infrastructure, mentoring and industry connections at Technology Business Incubators. The NIDHI-EIR programme offers a monthly fellowship of Rs 30,000 to budding entrepreneurs through DST-approved incubators.

Notable portfolio companies

NIDHI does not publish a startup portfolio in the venture-capital sense; its "portfolio" is the incubator network itself. Through the network, DST supports around 40 NIDHI-TBIs, taking the total count of DST-supported incubators past 175, and the network has supported more than 12,000 startups across the country, according to the programme's official site.

Key people

NIDHI is run by the TTI Division of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Programme execution happens through Technology Business Incubators (TBIs) acting as Program Executing Partners across the country.

Programs run

Beyond the seven core components, NIDHI runs international exchange programmes including the DST-GDC I-NCUBATE deep-tech customer-discovery programme with IIT Madras, the Indo-German InnoXchange Programme with DAAD and Germany's DWIH New Delhi, and the India-UK InnoXchange Programme with Innovate UK, all aimed at cross-border collaboration, market access and funding linkages for Indian deep-tech startups.

How to apply for funding

There is no single NIDHI application form. Founders apply through DST-approved Technology Business Incubators that execute each component: PRAYAS and EIR calls are announced by the incubators and listed on nidhi.dst.gov.in. Identify a TBI relevant to your sector and city, watch its call announcements, and apply to the component that matches your stage: idea-to-prototype for PRAYAS, fellowship for EIR, and early revenue for Seed Support.

Why it matters for founders

NIDHI is the Indian government's front door for first-time, tech-driven founders: up to ₹10 lakh to build a prototype and ₹30,000 a month while you find your feet. It is slow, paperwork-heavy money, but it is non-dilutive in spirit and it plugs you into 175-plus incubators. If you are pre-prototype, start here before you chase angels.
