Nesta is the UK's innovation agency for social good, and Nesta Impact Investments is its investment arm. Since 2012 it has invested directly in more than 30 early-stage companies from two previous funds, and it describes itself as the most active impact fund in the UK over the past decade. For founders whose business model depends on measurable social or environmental impact, it is one of the few investors that treats impact as the investment case, not as a footnote.
Thesis: profit and purpose together
Nesta Impact Investments backs early-stage technology businesses that deliver strong social and environmental impact alongside financial returns. Its strategy mirrors Nesta's three missions for 2030: giving every child a fair start, helping people live healthy lives, and creating a sustainable future where the economy works for people and the planet. Its executive director is Lisa Barclay, named in its strategy announcement.
The team looks for businesses in edtech, foodtech, healthtech, climate tech, the future of work and productivity. Current focuses include lower-carbon home heating, reducing obesity, early years provision and closing the school readiness gap, and financial inclusion solutions that reduce stress on families. It states plainly that it does not invest in drug development.
Fund size and cheque size
Its current strategy is a £50 million programme. Over £25 million of that is allocated to invest directly in early-stage startups over five years, writing cheques of £500,000 to £1 million at Seed to Series A stage, with the ability to invest up to £4 million over multiple rounds. It plans five to ten investments per year. The remaining capital supports the continued growth of Mission Studio and grant-making initiatives.
Its original fund was a £17.6 million vehicle launched in October 2012, backed by Big Society Capital, Omidyar Network and Nesta itself.
Notable portfolio
Its current portfolio includes digital educational resources platform Bibliu, AI skin cancer tool Skin Analytics and data and software provider for schools Arbor. Notable exits include FutureGov and BeApplied. The first three investments from the new fund, all with female founders, were tech-enabled childcare platform Koru Kids, Type 2 diabetes reversal programme Habitual Health, and a gastric balloon in a pill developed by Oxford Medical Products.
Programmes run
Mission Studio, a joint venture between Nesta and Founders Factory, launches new mission-led startups and provides them with initial investment to get off the ground. Separately, the Arts and Culture Impact Fund is a £20 million fund for arts organisations with positive social impact, in which Nesta committed £6 million alongside Arts Council England, The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Bank of America, Big Society Capital and the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation. It offers loans of up to £1 million, secured and unsecured.
Credits and perks
Nesta Impact Investments runs no cloud credits programme. Its added value is access to the wider 200-person Nesta organisation: research expertise, policy and governmental knowledge, data skills, behavioural insights and networks across health, education and sustainability.
How to apply for funding
Nesta's published route for social ventures has been to email [email protected] with details of the venture, the product or service, the team, finance requirements and contact details. No online portal was found, and the email route comes from an older listing, so check current criteria on nesta.org.uk first.
Why it matters for founders
If your startup improves children's life chances, healthy lives or a sustainable future in the UK, Nesta Impact Investments offers £500,000 to £1 million cheques plus policy-grade evidence support that most venture funds cannot match.
