Mustard Seed is a London impact investor built on one conviction: businesses whose products inherently benefit society will outperform. Founded in the early 2010s by Henry Wigan and Alex Pitt, it backs early-stage ventures where return and impact move in lock-step. That heritage continues under MS+PARTNERS, which also runs growth-equity and, since 2026, lower mid-market buyout strategies. For impact founders, Mustard Seed funding means an investor that treats purpose as the business model, not as marketing.
Investment thesis
Its lock-step approach seeks models where the product sold is itself a benefit to society, so that growth automatically grows impact. Its Virtuous Venture Cycle idea: purpose-driven companies earn stronger loyalty, attract better talent and benefit from favourable policy — a goodwill dividend compounding into returns. It looks for ventures where doing good and doing well are the same activity, measured against the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Sectors and stages
Sector-agnostic within impact, it invests at seed and Series A and follows on into growth rounds, spanning food, health tech, education, fintech, mobility and the circular economy. It focuses on the UK and Europe, with some investments in Asia and North America. MS+PARTNERS Fund I extends the philosophy to founder-led lower mid-market businesses across Western Europe, targeting enterprise values of €50 million to €500 million.
Fund size and cheque size
The size of the original Mustard Seed Venture Fund is not publicly disclosed. Early reporting describes seed investments of £100,000 to £500,000 with Series A follow-on; later profiles report typical tickets of $1 million to $5 million. MS+PARTNERS Fund I targets €300 million and announced a first close in September 2026 of close to €150 million, anchored by the European Investment Fund with COFIDES and BlackRock Private Equity Partners.
Notable portfolio
The venture portfolio includes some of the UK's best-known impact names. Winnow builds AI tools helping kitchens cut food waste, OLIO lets neighbours share unused food and goods, and what3words gives every three-metre square a three-word address. Others include Skin Analytics, tiney, Sojo, ILERNA, Collectiv Food, Switchee and Rapido. Exits include Lifecake, Mush, Hire Hand, Stuffstr and Kitch.
Partners
Henry Wigan, a former BlackRock portfolio manager, and Alex Pitt founded the firm and its lock-step philosophy. Stanislas de Joussineau is co-founder and managing partner of MS+PARTNERS, leading an eight-person team advised by former KKR and McKinsey partners.
Programs, credits and perks
Mustard Seed does not publish a cloud-credits or accelerator perks programme, and founders should not expect one. Its distinctive support is its Member Network, connecting founders with operators, customers and follow-on investors. Its venture fund has been compatible with the UK's EIS and SEIS tax reliefs, a benefit for eligible UK angel co-investors.
How to apply for funding
There is no public application portal, so how to get funding from Mustard Seed is a direct, networked route: contact the firm via mustardseed.vc or mustardseed.partners, or seek a warm introduction from a portfolio founder or co-investor. The strongest application proves lock-step in one paragraph: what the product does, who benefits, and why selling more creates more impact. Bring impact metrics alongside unit economics, and show how purpose drives retention or pricing power.
Why it matters for founders
Mustard Seed is the call when your impact is your moat, not your marketing. From seed tickets starting at £100,000 to the €300 million MS+PARTNERS Fund I, it has spent a decade proving lock-step businesses can deliver returns and social change together.
