MassChallenge is a US 501(c)(3) nonprofit and the world's largest zero-equity startup accelerator, founded in 2009 in Boston by John Harthorne and Akhil Nigam. It takes no equity and charges no application fee — a deliberate contrast to the equity-for-acceleration model. Since 2009 it has supported 5,000+ startups, whose alumni have raised over US$16 billion.
Indian founders are squarely eligible. MassChallenge accepts applications from startups anywhere in the world; its 2023 US Early Stage cohort included startups from India among 20 countries, Bengaluru-based Ziroh Labs joined the 2018 MassChallenge Israel cohort, and MassChallenge Israel teamed up with the Deshpande Foundation and NASSCOM on a scholarship programme specifically for Indian startups.
Investment thesis
MassChallenge is not a VC — it is a competition-model accelerator: identify the highest-impact, highest-potential startups and connect them with mentors, corporate partners and capital. The zero-equity structure exists so founders keep full ownership while accessing enterprise pilots, mentorship and non-dilutive awards.
Sectors and stage
Core programs are industry-agnostic, with vertical tracks in HealthTech, FinTech, Climate, Space, AgeTech, sustainable food, maternal-child health and defence/dual-use. Eligibility: early-stage startups with under US$1M equity raised and under US$2M annual revenue for core programs; under US$10M raised and US$10M revenue for vertical programs.
Fund size and cheque size
Fund size is not publicly disclosed — MassChallenge is a nonprofit accelerator, not a fund. (A US$2 million MC Innovation Fund announced in October 2026 funds the organisation's own growth initiatives, not startup investments.) Selected startups compete for non-dilutive cash awards; the ISS National Lab Technology in Space Prize offers up to US$500K per year in non-dilutive funding.
Notable portfolio
With 5,000+ alumni and US$16B+ raised, the alumni base is the portfolio. India-relevant alumni include Ziroh Labs (Bengaluru). Corporate partners active across programs include AARP, BAE Systems, MITRE, Boeing, P&G, SharkNinja, Verizon, Mars, Givaudan, Bühler, Deloitte and Autodesk.
Programs and perks
Early-stage accelerators run in Boston, Texas, Israel, Switzerland and Mexico, alongside vertical and challenge programs: the Sustainable Food Solutions Challenge (with Mars, Givaudan and Bühler), the AARP AgeTech Challenge, the BAE Systems Deep-Tech Accelerator, the Deloitte Commercial Space Program and a Traction Program for cross-border startups. Benefits are zero-cost participation, a large mentor network, corporate pilot access and residency workspace.
How to apply for funding
Register at accelerate.masschallenge.org, create founder and startup profiles, and submit an application for the chosen program — selection runs through two rounds of judging (online review, then a virtual pitch). Live programs for 2026 include the Fintech Challenge, the Healthcare Challenge with Altus Dental, and the Sustainable Food Solutions Challenge (deadline 25 November 2026).
Why it matters for founders
For Indian founders, MassChallenge is the highest-leverage free application in global acceleration: zero equity, zero fees, worldwide eligibility, and enterprise pilots with names like Boeing, Verizon and Mars. The Israel track's India scholarship with Deshpande Foundation and NASSCOM makes it especially reachable — a strong application costs nothing but a weekend.
