JAM FINTOP is a fintech venture investor with a structural advantage most funds cannot copy: it is owned by the banks it serves. A joint venture between JAM Special Opportunity Ventures, an affiliate of Jacobs Asset Management, and FINTOP Capital, it invests in companies changing the way financial institutions and their customers move, track and interact with money.

The thesis: banks as investors, customers and distribution

JAM FINTOP brings together bank experts and seasoned fintech entrepreneurs. JAM has a decades-long history investing in public and private community banks, while FINTOP Capital is a leading fintech investor with more than a century of collective experience across its team. The result is a network of more than 80 banks that invest in the funds, test portfolio products and buy them. At the launch of its blockchain fund, the network counted 79 banks with $1 trillion in combined assets.

For a fintech founder, that network solves the hardest problem in bank technology: distribution. Selling to a regulated bank takes years of compliance work and trust-building. A JAM FINTOP portfolio company starts with dozens of potential bank customers already inside the tent.

Sectors and stages

JAM FINTOP invests in early-stage fintech: bank technology, payments, digital lending, wealthtech, cybersecurity and compliance for financial institutions, and blockchain infrastructure that helps regulated institutions operate blockchain applications compliantly in lending, payments and exchanges. Its focus is technology that community and mid-size banks can actually adopt.

Fund size and cheque size

JAM FINTOP manages two venture funds. JAM FINTOP Banktech held a closing in April 2021 with $150 million of committed capital to accelerate technology adoption at community banks. JAM FINTOP Blockchain raised about $110 million at first close and reached $164 million of signed subscriptions, with a target cap of $200 million. Individual cheque sizes are not publicly disclosed.

Notable portfolio companies

DefenseStorm, a cybersecurity, compliance and fraud platform built specifically for banking, which raised a $15 million round including $5 million from JAM FINTOP. Monit, a Boston fintech backed by the Banktech fund. Numerated, a digital lending platform. Securitize, a tokenisation platform for regulated securities. Coin Metrics, a crypto market data provider. Capacity, Infinant, Parlay, Cerebro Capital and d1g1t in wealthtech and financial software are also in the portfolio.

Partners and programmes

The JAM FINTOP Network is the programme. Strategic investors in the funds include banks such as First Horizon, Synovus Financial, Umpqua Holdings, Atlantic Union Bankshares and Amerant Bancorp, alongside Figure Technologies, whose chief executive Mike Cagney serves as a strategic adviser, and Piper Sandler, whose digital assets group advises the blockchain fund. The network gives portfolio companies direct access to bank executives, regulatory insight and pilot opportunities across the United States.

How to apply for funding

Founders can reach JAM FINTOP through its official website at jamfintop.com. The strongest pitches show a product that a community or mid-size bank can adopt without a multi-year integration project, a clear compliance story, and a business model that benefits from bank distribution. Founders building for regulated financial institutions should explain how the network's banks become customers, not just investors.

Why it matters for founders

JAM FINTOP turns the hardest part of fintech, selling to banks, into its core advantage. With $150 million in its Banktech fund, $164 million in subscriptions for its Blockchain fund, and 80-plus banks in its network, it offers fintech founders capital plus a ready-made customer base of regulated institutions.
