Incofin Investment Management NV is a Belgian impact investor and licensed Alternative Investment Fund Manager that has been deploying patient capital in emerging markets since 1992. It manages $1.1 billion in AUM as of 31 December 2024, and has cumulatively invested $4.8 billion across 50+ countries. For Indian founders in inclusive finance, agri and clean water, it is one of the most India-active European impact investors in the market.
Its India footprint is institutional, not opportunistic. Incofin registered an Indian entity, Incofin India Investment Management Private Limited, in Chennai in 2019, runs a Chennai office, and has backed a long list of Indian microfinance and financial-inclusion companies.
Investment thesis
Incofin pursues a double bottom line: financial returns plus measurable social impact. Its conviction, in its own words, is that "when people have access to capital – not handouts – they can grow businesses, strengthen communities and build better futures." It backs the missing middle: enterprises too large for microfinance and too small for mainstream private equity.
Sectors and stage
Three sectors: inclusive finance (microfinance and financial inclusion), sustainable food and agriculture (smallholder value chains) and clean water. It invests growth-capital equity and debt in established microfinance institutions, financial institutions and agri-food SMEs — not seed-stage startups.
Fund size and cheque size
Firm AUM stands at $1.1 billion (December 2024). Its India-dedicated vehicle, the India Progress Fund, hit a first close of ₹450 crore in July 2021 with investors including BII (British International Investment), Proparco, Korys and BIO, and targets minority-equity cheques of ₹25–70 crore. Earlier, the Rural Impulse Fund II wrote $1–5 million equity tickets in Indian MFIs.
Notable portfolio
Indian investees include Fusion Microfinance, Annapurna Finance, Arman Financial Services, Hope MicroCredit Finance (a ₹10 crore investment via Rural Impulse Fund II), Asomi Finance, SAVE Solutions, Sohan Lal Commodity Management and Light Microfinance. Incofin exited Grameen Koota after an early ₹25 crore equity bet.
Partners and team
Founded by chairperson Loïc De Cannière, the firm is led by CEO Geert Peetermans. India coverage sits with partners Aditya Bhandari (South Asia) and Rahul Rai (India, agri focus).
Programs and perks
Incofin manages a stable of named funds: Rural Impulse Fund I & II, ProPulse Fund, agRIF (agricultural finance), the India Progress Fund, Incofin CVSO (a Belgian retail cooperative fund), the Fairtrade Access Fund and the Agri-Finance Liquidity Facility, managed for KfW since 2020. No credits or perks programme is published.
How to apply for funding
Incofin runs no public founder application portal. The real route is direct outreach to the regional investment team via the official contact channels at incofin.com — its Chennai office covers India. (Note: the published [email protected] address serves investor relations, not pitch submissions.)
Why it matters for founders
Incofin is the patient-capital answer for Indian founders building in financial inclusion, agri value chains and water — sectors where a 7-year fund horizon beats a 3-year VC sprint. If you are a growth-stage MFI, NBFC or agri SME with measurable impact, its ₹25–70 crore India Progress Fund cheques and Chennai-based team make it one of the most reachable European impact investors on the subcontinent.
