Idealab funding works differently from a conventional venture fund, and founders should understand that difference first. Founded in Pasadena, California, in March 1996 by Bill Gross, Idealab is a startup studio: it creates and incubates technology companies from ideas, testing many concepts and turning the best into independent ventures,.

Investment thesis

Idealab believes great companies can be built systematically, not only discovered. It develops ideas internally, assembles teams around them, and provides the shared resources a new venture needs to reach independence. Its focus has shifted over time: after the early internet wave it moved towards robotics and alternative energy.

Sectors and stages

Idealab works at the earliest possible stage: company creation itself, before a conventional seed round exists. Its historical sectors include information technology, energy, consumer products and services, while its current studio work emphasises clean energy and deep technology. Later funding for spin-outs comes from outside investors.

Fund size and cheque size

As a startup studio rather than a traditional fund, Idealab does not publish a single fund size, and its fund size and standard cheque size are therefore not publicly disclosed in the usual venture sense. What is public is scale of a different kind: the studio says it has launched more than 175 companies, including GoTo.com, Citysearch and Tickets.com.

Notable portfolio

Idealab's early portfolio included CitySearch, GoTo.com (later Overture), CarsDirect.com, eToys, NetZero, Tickets.com and Picasa. Its later energy work produced Heliogen, which developed concentrated solar technology reaching above 1,000 degrees Celsius for industrial heat, and Energy Vault, which Bill Gross co-founded for utility-scale energy storage. Recent studio companies include Aptera Motors, Carbon Capture Inc. ($35 million Series A) and NuCube Energy ($13 million).

Partners

Bill Gross is the founder and remains central to the studio; before Idealab he founded GNP Development, acquired by Lotus, and Knowledge Adventure, later sold to Havas/Vivendi. Tom McGovern serves as managing director and Marcia Goodstein as chief operating officer and president, according to third-party profiles. Idealab also works through Idealab Studio and Idealab NY.

Programs, credits and perks

The studio itself is the programme: incubated companies receive office space, development and technology services, product and graphic design, marketing, financial guidance, human resources, legal support, research and business development. In October 2026, Bill Gross also launched Idealab.ai, offering more than 1.2 million business ideas free to search and use, with funding applications planned for later releases. Reporting described Cloudflare's commitment as $100,000 in credits for each start-up using the platform.

How to apply for funding

How to get funding from Idealab is not a standard application: there is no open venture fund portal with a deadline, because the studio primarily creates companies from its own ideas and builds teams around them. The realistic route is to contact the studio through idealab.com with a genuinely novel technology idea or relevant deep expertise, or to explore Idealab.ai and its forthcoming funding features. Founders with an existing, fundable company will usually find a better fit with a conventional venture firm.

Why it matters for founders

Idealab is not for every founder, and that is the point. If you have deep technology expertise and want to build a company from the ground up inside a studio with three decades of company-creation experience, it is a rare option. If you already have a company and need a seed cheque, look to a traditional venture fund instead.
