Flyover Capital, founded in 2014 and based in the Kansas City area, invests in early-stage technology companies in the middle of the United States. Its name is its thesis: talented founders and large industries exist far beyond Silicon Valley and the Northeast corridor, and those companies are often underestimated by coastal investors.
Investment thesis
Flyover Capital says its mission is to create the next generation of technology success stories outside the traditional tech hubs. It partners with entrepreneurs, corporations, universities and other venture firms that are transforming the heartland's largest industries through technology. It looks for founders with industry-leading value propositions in sectors rooted in the region's natural and industrial strengths, and it invests with conviction at seed and post-seed stage.
Sectors and stages
The firm targets seed and early-stage technology companies, with a focus on fintech, insurtech, proptech, agtech, logistics, transportation, supply chain, data security and applied artificial intelligence for essential industries. Its portfolio spans many states, and its own portfolio page lists companies from Kansas City and Chicago to Atlanta, Austin and San Francisco, showing that geography is a starting lens rather than a strict boundary.
Fund size and cheque size
Flyover Capital closed Flyover Capital Tech Fund II in September 2021 with over $60 million in capital commitments, exceeding its $50 million target and bringing total assets under management to approximately $110 million at that time. Its current total assets under management are not publicly disclosed beyond that figure. Fund II targets initial equity investments of $500,000 to $2 million in rounds of $1 million to $5 million.
Notable portfolio and partners
Its portfolio includes Opendorse, Snappy Kraken, Verusen, RiskGenius, Agrible and Zoloz (formerly EyeVerify), alongside newer names such as Trially, Champion, DevStride and Chowly. Several companies have been acquired, including Agrible by Nutrien and RiskGenius by Bold Penguin. Its team includes General Partners Thad Langford, Marty Bicknell and Keith Molzer, with Dan Kerr as a Partner. It does not publish a startup credits or perks programme.
How to apply for funding
Founders can contact Flyover Capital through flyovercapital.com, which publishes its portfolio and team, and warm introductions through its corporate, university and co-investor network are a common route. A pitch should explain the industry problem clearly, show why the heartland is an advantage for building the company, and fit the seed or post-seed cheque range above.
Why it matters for founders
Flyover Capital is a natural first call for a seed-stage technology founder building in the Midwest or another overlooked region. Coastal founders can still fit, but the firm's edge is clearest where its network is deepest.
