Finistere Ventures is a California-based venture capital investor focused on the food value chain, founded in 2005. With offices in Palo Alto and San Diego and additional operations in Ireland, Israel and Australasia, it is one of the longest-running specialist agrifood investors in the world. Its team says it has developed and invested in companies now worth more than $5 billion, and it brings an operator's mindset to early-stage food and agriculture investing.
Thesis: technology that transforms the food value chain
Finistere partners with entrepreneurs and creative thinkers building companies that can transform modern agriculture, increase food security, improve nutrition and enhance sustainability. It looks for innovation across the whole food value chain — from crop science and farm data to food products and supply chains — and it uses its venture partner networks in the United States, Australia, Israel, New Zealand and Canada to find technologies from global centres of agrifood excellence.
Its current fund focus is early-stage: Finistere Ventures Fund III, which closed in 2021, targets pre-A and Series A technology investments that will define the changing food value chain.
Fund size and track record
Finistere announced the first closing of a $150 million agtech fund in collaboration with Bayer CropScience and AVAC Ltd., its second fund vehicle. The final size of Finistere Ventures Fund III was not publicly disclosed in the firm's own closing announcement, so no figure is stated here for that fund. Separately, Finistere partnered with New Zealand Growth Capital Partners on a NZ$40 million agrifood fund focused on sustainability and nutrition innovations, backing advanced crop protection, nutrient management, alternative proteins, food delivery and supply chain advances in New Zealand.
Notable portfolio companies
Finistere's portfolio includes Taranis, a precision agriculture intelligence platform that analyses ultra-high-resolution crop imagery to detect disease, pests, nutrient deficiency and water damage; Finistere participated in its $20 million Series B round and its later $30 million Series C round. It also backed CropX, which uses soil sensors to optimise crop yields, and Hi Fidelity Genetics, a computational crop breeding company whose $8.5 million Series A was co-led by Finistere and Fall Line Capital. Finistere Ventures Fund III investments have also included Enko, Good Eggs, Tovala and UPSIDE Foods.
Team and programmes
Finistere Ventures was co-founded by managing partner Spencer Maughan, and in 2021 it appointed Steve Goldberg as a partner to lead early-stage investments from Fund III, with a focus on artificial intelligence, the internet of things and other technology-driven companies. Goldberg previously spent a decade as an operating partner at Venrock and joined the board of portfolio company Taranis. The firm's support model is hands-on and operator-led: strategic, operational and governance guidance through team expansion, product development, intellectual property protection and proof of concept.
How to apply for funding
No public application portal was found on Finistere's website. Founders should approach through finistere.com with a concise pitch centred on the food value chain problem, the technology advantage, and the proof-of-concept evidence. Given the firm's global venture partner network, an introduction through a regional partner, a co-investor or a portfolio founder is a strong route in, particularly for startups outside the United States.
Why it matters for founders
Finistere is a good fit for early-stage agrifood founders with a genuine technology edge and a global outlook. Its $150 million second fund and closed Fund III show a firm comfortable leading early rounds across continents. Pitch the technology, the proof of concept, and the food value chain problem in that order.
