Elkstone is a Dublin-based private markets firm that has become Ireland's leading early-stage venture investor. Founded in 2011 by Alan Merriman, Ciarán McIntyre and Ruairí O'Neill, it backs Irish founders building technology companies with global ambition, and describes itself as the country's largest and most sought-after early-stage venture investor.
Thesis
Elkstone is sector agnostic but disciplined about what it backs: businesses that are tech-enabled, capital-light and internationally scalable. It judges every opportunity against five criteria — strength of talent, international scalability, timing, capital-light economics and tech enablement — and argues that founder talent is the single most important factor in its selection process. Its stated mission is to help indigenous Irish startups scale internationally while staying headquartered in Ireland and creating high-quality local jobs.
Sectors & Stages
Elkstone invests at seed and pre-Series A stage across technology-enabled sectors, from software and artificial intelligence to healthcare and industrial safety. It does not limit itself to pure technology companies; any business where digital capability or internally developed intellectual property is a key enabler of market access can qualify. Its portfolio spans at-home healthcare, drone delivery, voice AI, email security and digital ordering.
Fund & Cheque Size
Elkstone Venture Fund I, launched in April 2022, is Ireland's largest early-stage venture fund at €100 million, backed by Enterprise Ireland, which committed €20 million, and the Ireland Strategic Investment Fund (ISIF). Since launch, Fund I has invested in 23 Irish startups, taking Elkstone's Irish portfolio past 40 companies. Typical cheques for seed and pre-Series A rounds are reported at €1 million to €2 million. Elkstone also runs Elkstone Venture Fund II, an EIIS fund offering investors up to 30% EIIS tax relief. Across its venture activity it has invested in more than 70 companies, including three unicorns.
Notable Portfolio
Elkstone's best-known portfolio companies include LetsGetChecked and Flipdish, both valued at more than $1 billion, alongside drone-delivery company Manna, voice AI company SoapBox Labs, industrial safety platform Protex AI, data science platform Zerve, email security company Mesh, and early Fund I investments such as Bluedrop Medical, Inclusio, HealthBeacon, Output Sports and Danalto.
Partners & Programs
The venture team is led by Niall McEvoy, Head of Venture, with venture partners Sarah Bogossian and Barry Brennan. Joe Bergin became Group CEO in early 2026, with co-founder Alan Merriman moving to Executive Director to focus on scaling portfolio companies. Beyond its funds, Elkstone runs the Venture Club, which gives investors direct access to co-invest alongside the fund in high-growth startups, and a Founder Series of video profiles of its portfolio founders. It works closely with Enterprise Ireland and had advocated the EIIS legislative change that made its first fund possible. No published credits or perks programme for founders was found.
How to apply for funding
Founders can approach Elkstone through its website, where it invites enquiries about its venture investment opportunities. The strongest pitches will show exceptional founder talent, a capital-light model, and a credible path to international scale from an Irish base — the three tests the firm applies most strictly. Seed and pre-Series A companies with early traction and a tech-enabled product are the natural fit.
Why it matters for founders
For Irish founders, Elkstone is the most important early-stage door in the country: a €100 million fund, a direct co-investment club, and a track record that includes two unicorns. If your company is capital-light, tech-enabled and built to scale internationally from Ireland, this is a first call, not a fallback.
