Who is DG Incubation?
DG Incubation, Inc. (DGI) is the investment and incubation arm of Digital Garage, Inc. (TSE: 4819), the Tokyo-listed technology company built around payments and marketing. It is the operating core of Digital Garage's Global Investment Incubation Segment, which also houses DG Ventures, DG Strategic Investment, DG Daiwa Ventures (a joint venture with Daiwa Securities Group), the seed accelerator Open Network Lab and the content studio DK Gate. Digital Garage has been investing since its founding and famously backed Twitter (now X) in its early days.
Investment thesis
DGI's thesis is context design: discover promising startups worldwide and plug them into Digital Garage's real businesses, most visibly its advanced payment platform. The firm invests and then works operationally with founders on business models, strategy, hiring and fundraising. Alongside pure returns, it seeks synergy with the group's payments, marketing and fintech assets.
Sectors and stages
DGI backs startups at every stage from seed to growth, with a stated focus on fintech, digital transformation (DX), ESG and, increasingly, generative AI. It operates four funds: the Open Network Lab and ESG I "Earthshot Fund", Open Network Lab Fund II, the Sapporo Innovation Fund and the Hamagin DG Innovation Fund. Geography spans Japan, Asia, North America and Europe, fed by a proprietary Global Incubation Stream deal-sourcing network.
Cheque size and fund size
Individual fund economics are disclosed selectively: the group's older DG Lab Fund I was JPY 6.8 billion and DG Lab Fund II JPY 12.5 billion (FY2022 IR figures), while the Hamagin DG Innovation Fund was JPY 3 billion. Aggregate assets under management for DG Incubation are not publicly disclosed, and individual cheque sizes are not published.
Notable portfolio companies
Beyond the early Twitter bet, DGI's public portfolio includes Blockstream and Hong Kong startup studio Mind Fund, backed in 2017 to build a "Global Incubation Bridge" from Tokyo and San Francisco into Asia. More than 150 startups have been supported through Open Network Lab, including 3 IPOs and several unicorns.

Programs, credits and perks
The flagship program is Open Network Lab (Onlab), founded in 2010 as Japan's first seed accelerator for global startups, now extended by Onlab HOKKAIDO for ventures leveraging Hokkaido's agriculture and tourism resources. The newer GenLab startup studio supports generative AI founders through a Japan-US-Europe network anchored at the DG717 incubation centre in San Francisco. On the ESG front, DGI is the general partner of the Earthshot Fund and signed the Japan Impact-driven Financing Initiative in May 2022. No generic startup credits are publicly advertised; the value-add is the accelerator, the studio and group business development.
How to apply for funding
Startups can apply directly to Open Network Lab at onlab.jp, the group's open front door for seed-stage founders. For direct investment or the GenLab studio, founders should contact DG Incubation via its official site, dgincubation.com.
Why it matters for founders
DG Incubation funding means more than a cheque: it is a route into one of Japan's most connected internet groups, with accelerator, studio and corporate partnership paths. If you are building in fintech, DX or generative AI and want a Japan launchpad, Open Network Lab is the door to knock on.
