Baidu Ventures funding targets one thing: early-stage artificial intelligence. Launched by Baidu in 2016 as an independent VC — deliberately separate from the search giant's own investment and M&A team — Baidu Ventures (BV) was one of China's first AI-native venture funds, and it remains the cleanest way for deep-tech founders to get Baidu's backing.

Thesis

BV backs early-stage technology companies across the AI stack: the AI industry chain, autonomous driving, life sciences, robotics and next-generation computing. It describes itself as an independent entity with its own evaluation process, designed for faster decisions than a corporate investment team. Around 90% of its investments are made before Series A, and it operates from Beijing and San Francisco — an unusually global footprint for a China-rooted AI fund. Baidu CEO Robin Li acts as chairman of the fund, with Wei Liu as CEO.

Cheque size & stages

BV launched in September 2016 with an initial investment fund of US$200 million — the publicly stated figure. Total assets under management across its funds are not publicly disclosed. Do not confuse BV with its sister unit Baidu Capital, which targets mid- and late-stage companies with individual cheques of US$50–100 million. In 2023 Baidu also set up a reported 1 billion yuan (~US$145 million) AI fund under the Baidu Ventures name for generative-AI startups in NLP, computer vision and speech recognition. BV's sweet spot is pre-seed to Series A.

Notable portfolio

BV reports 200+ investments globally, but individual historical portfolio companies are not itemised in verified public sources — so they are not listed here. One verified recent deal: Chuguang Yueqian, a physical-AI startup founded by former Horizon smart-driving lead Zhang Ying, closed a nine-figure seed round in October 2026 with BV Baidu Ventures, Xiaomi Strategy Investment and Chentao Capital. BV has been named among 36Kr's most popular VC institutions among entrepreneurs and a top-20 AI/big-data investor by the China Venture Capital Research Institute.

Programs & perks

BV runs no public accelerator or open application programme. It positions itself as a long-term technical partner rather than a passive cheque — offering portfolio companies technical support and access to global resources, a meaningful edge for AI founders who can use Baidu's research depth. These benefits are qualitative, not quantified, and there is no public credits programme.

How to apply for Baidu Ventures funding

There is no verified open application portal — BV's official site (bv.ai) was under construction at the time of research. In practice, BV works like a classic early-stage VC: warm introductions, direct partner outreach, and visibility in the AI research and founder community carry the day, through its Beijing and San Francisco teams. AI founders with strong technical teams and pre-Series A traction are the profile BV was built for.

Why it matters for founders

Baidu Ventures is the rare corporate VC that behaves like a real early-stage fund: independent, AI-only, and writing its first cheques before Series A. For deep-tech founders, it offers something most corporate investors cannot — Baidu's AI research depth without a corporate M&A agenda. The catch is access: with no public application route, you need a warm path in.
