Azolla Ventures is the impact-first climate investor launched in 2021 by the nonprofit Prime Coalition. Where most venture firms optimise for returns and treat impact as a bonus, Azolla flips the order: every investment must first hold the potential for gigaton-scale greenhouse gas reductions, and it deploys blended catalytic capital into the risky, overlooked breakthroughs conventional VCs will not touch.
The thesis
The fund invests only in companies meeting three criteria: impact (the potential to reduce or remove at least 0.5 gigatons of CO2-equivalent cumulatively by 2050), additionality (unlikely to raise sufficient funding from conventional investors at the time of investment) and commercial potential (a credible path to commercial success at scale). Prime Coalition independently evaluates and governs impact for every deal, and even the managers' carried interest is influenced by independently assessed impact performance — a deliberate guard against greenwashing.
Fund size and structure
Azolla Ventures manages the $239 million Azolla Fund I, a blended vehicle combining $80 million in philanthropic capital with $159 million in impact-aligned, market-rate capital, plus the $50 million Prime Impact Fund it inherited from Prime Coalition. Backers include the Grantham Environmental Trust and the Cisco Foundation, alongside family offices, donor-advised funds and private foundations. Up to 30% of commitments may go to non-US companies.
Notable portfolio
Early investments include Heaten (high-temperature heat pumps for industry), Funga (forest microbiome optimisation for carbon storage), SiTration (membranes for low-cost battery recycling), Carbon Reform (building-based carbon capture), Calcarea (decarbonising shipping) and Scalvy (modular EV drivetrains). Later names in the portfolio include low-carbon cement maker Sublime Systems, geothermal startup Zanskar, methane-focused Biolumic, green-methanol company Oxylus Energy and algae wastewater-treatment firm AlgaFilm.
Who runs it
The firm was co-founded by general partners Johanna Wolfson, Amy Duffuor and Matthew Nordan — the same team that built and deployed Prime Coalition's earlier Prime Impact Fund. It is based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
How to apply for funding
There is no public application portal. Founders can reach the team through the business contact published on azollaventures.com ([email protected]). Lead with your gigaton-scale emissions math and be ready to show why conventional venture capital cannot fund you yet — that gap is exactly what the fund exists to fill.
Why it matters for founders
If your climate breakthrough is too early, too weird or too capital-intensive for mainstream VCs, Azolla Ventures and its $239 million blended fund were purpose-built for you — catalytic capital that stays in longer and accepts higher risk.
