Introduction
Ascension, formerly Ascension Ventures, is a London based pre-seed and seed investor that has been one of the UK's most active technology investors since 2015. It manages more than 100 million pounds and has backed more than 150 companies. In January 2026, the bank committed up to 10 million pounds to Ascension through its Regional Angels Programme.
Thesis
The Ascension thesis has two strands. The first is conventional early stage venture: back exceptional founders at pre-seed and seed, then support them to Series A and beyond. The second is impact: through its Fair By Design fund and Ascension Fund III, it backs technology that reduces social inequalities, on the view that impact is a source of value, not a trade off. Its team and venture partners have invested 5.4 million pounds of their own money into its funds.
Sectors and stages
Ascension invests at pre-seed and seed in technology and digital businesses, with its impact fund spanning artificial intelligence and machine learning, digital health, future of work, fintech, energy decentralisation and decarbonisation. Its tax efficient funds target late seed companies showing early product market fit, with a route to Series A and 12 to 18 months of runway.
Fund size and cheque size
The firm's tax efficient range comprises the Ascension EIS Fund and the Ascension SEIS Fund, structured as evergreen vehicles investing in 10 to 12 businesses per investor over 12 months. Its institutional impact vehicle, Ascension Fund III, targeted 50 million pounds, with a first close of 17 million pounds reported. Syndicate opportunities carry a minimum of 25,000 pounds per deal for investors. A standard first cheque size for founders is not publicly disclosed on the firm's fund pages, so founders should discuss round size directly with the team.
Notable portfolio
The firm reports 15 profitable exits since 2018, a mean exit multiple of 4.0x, including seven exits of 5x or more and three of 9x or more. Acquirers have included Apple, CoreWeave, Santander, Unity and MEWS. Its impact portfolio includes Wagestream, the earned wage access company, Tembo, Plend and Switchee. Other names include Sprive, Heatio and Night Zookeeper.
Partners and team
Ascension was founded by managing partner Jean de Fougerolles, with Emma Steele among its partners and Emma Blackburn named UKBAA Angel Investor of the Year in 2026. Around 25% of Ascension is owned by its 17 venture partners. In 2026 it also agreed to acquire QVentures, bringing that firm's platform and portfolio into the group.
Programs, credits and perks
Ascension does not run a public accelerator programme, and no startup credits or perks bundle is advertised on its fund pages. Founder support comes through the investment team, venture partners, and the expanded pipeline from the QVentures acquisition. Its impact work has involved collaborations with the Nationwide Incubator and Wayra.
How to apply for funding from Ascension
No public application form for founders was verified on the firm's site at the time of writing. Founders should approach Ascension via ascension.vc, including [email protected], ready to show a live product, early traction and a route to Series A. Impact founders should state clearly which inequality the product reduces, the explicit test for Ascension Fund III.
Why it matters for founders
Ascension combines 15 profitable exits since 2018 with a regional and impact mandate backed by the British Business Bank. For a UK founder outside London, or building technology with a social purpose, it is one of the most relevant seed investors to approach first.
