Artal Asia put Indian growth capital in the spotlight in September 2026 with a Rs 532 crore strategic investment in Bengaluru's Popo Global — the parent of The Pizza Bakery, Paris Panini and Smash Guys — for a significant minority stake. Artal Asia funding comes from a distinctive source: the Singapore-based firm is an affiliate of US-based Invus Group, the investment arm deploying capital from the Artal vehicle on behalf of Belgian billionaire Eric Wittouck's family group.
What Artal Asia funding looks like
Artal Asia operates with family-capital DNA: long-duration, direct-ownership investments alongside owner-managers, rather than the timed-exit pressure of conventional private equity. Legal advisories on the Popo transaction describe Invus as the global investment advisor to Artal Asia Pte. Ltd. Its known India bets before Popo Global included Burger Singh and Jumbotail, pointing to a taste for consumer and food-led businesses built by strong founding teams.
The Popo Global deal
Popo Global was founded in 2017 by brothers Nikhil Gupta and Abhijit "AB" Gupta, starting with a single The Pizza Bakery outlet in Bengaluru and expanding to Paris Panini and Smash Guys. The company runs around 40 company-owned outlets (a COCO model, not franchised), generated around Rs 175 crore in FY25 revenue and stayed profitable, per industry reports. This was Popo Global's first external institutional capital raise — nine years of bootstrapped growth before taking outside money. Reports put the transaction valuation in the Rs 1,250–1,500 crore range, though the company did not officially disclose the valuation.
Welcoming Artal Asia onto their cap table, the brothers noted they had started nine years ago simply trying to make one great pizza: "We didn't set out to build a leading restaurant company, and certainly not to be talking one day about bringing in a global investor." The transaction itself was institutionally heavyweight: Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas and Argus Partners advised Popo Global and its founders, while TT&A advised Artal Asia Pte. Ltd. (of which Invus is the global investment advisor).
Artal Asia's fund size has not been publicly disclosed.
How to apply for funding
Artal Asia publishes no public pitch form or application route, and its deal flow is relationship-led through the Invus/Artal Asia team in Singapore and India. Founders running profitable, bootstrapped consumer or food businesses at meaningful scale — and open to a minority partner with a long holding horizon — are the natural fit; introductions typically come via founders, advisors or existing portfolio networks.
Why it matters for founders
Artal Asia represents a rare species in Indian funding: family-backed capital with no fund-clock forcing an exit. Its Rs 532 crore bet on a profitable, bootstrapped nine-year-old restaurant company shows it rewards patience and execution over blitz-scaling — exactly the partner founders wish they had, and almost never find.
