Amex Ventures is the corporate venture capital arm of American Express, investing off its own balance sheet since 2011. Unlike many CVCs that behave like ordinary VCs, Amex Ventures is explicitly strategic: roughly two-thirds of its investments have led to partnerships with American Express business units, so founders get a commercial partner, not just a cheque.
For Indian founders, the important fact is geographic. India is Amex Ventures' second-largest geography after the United States, with five investments in the country tracked by Tracxn. The arm has been placing bets in India for over a decade — and its thesis sits squarely where Indian fintech, commerce and consumer startups live.
Investment thesis
Amex Ventures backs startups that (a) enhance the Amex Consumer Card Membership value proposition — travel, dining, entertainment and passion points; (b) complement the Amex dining platform, including Resy; and (c) advance consumer fintech (seamless, secure payments), B2B fintech (payments automation and workflow efficiency), commerce (discovery, engagement, conversion and post-purchase loyalty) and enterprise software, with a growing emphasis on Gen AI and agentic AI.
Sectors and stage
Sectors span Consumer, Fintech (consumer and B2B), Commerce, Enterprise Technology & Software and Frontier Tech. The arm invests from early stage through growth: its site describes managing directors leading early-stage investments, while portfolio rounds range from Seed to Series D. No formal stage range is published.
Fund size and cheque size
The fund size is not publicly disclosed — Amex Ventures invests from American Express's balance sheet, as is standard for CVCs. Cheque sizes are not published either.
Notable portfolio
In India, the arm's portfolio includes Capillary Technologies (its first India bet, a roughly ₹31 crore round in 2014), Helpchat (whose roughly ₹70 crore Series C was led by Amex Ventures in 2016), the AI shopping assistant Mezi, and Ezetap Mobile Solutions, the Bengaluru mobile-payments company later acquired by Razorpay in August 2022. Globally, the portfolio includes unicorns such as Glean, Prove and FalconX, alongside Decagon, Galileo, Mindtrip, BILT and Traversal. Recent activity includes Fazeshift (August 2026) and participation in Airwallex's Series H (June 2026).
Partners and team
The arm is led by Matt Sueoka, Senior Vice President and Global Head of Amex Ventures. Managing directors include Margaret Lim, who covers early-stage investments across fintech, commerce and frontier tech, and Kevin Weber. Harshul Sanghi headed the arm at the time of the 2014 Capillary investment.
Programs and perks
Amex Ventures runs Amex Ventures Insights, its official insights and content hub for founders and investors, and hosts founder community events — including a 2025 gathering of early-stage founders building in agentic commerce, agentic applications and stablecoins with Amex's Global Merchant & Network Services team. No credits or perks programme is published.
How to apply for funding
There is no application form. The official route, per Amex Ventures' own guidance: reach out at [email protected] or connect on LinkedIn, starting from americanexpress.com/us/business/american-express-ventures/.
Why it matters for founders
Amex Ventures offers something Indian fintech, commerce and AI founders rarely get from domestic VCs: a direct commercial bridge into American Express's global card, dining and payments ecosystem. With India as its second-biggest geography and two-thirds of its bets turning into Amex partnerships, a sharp note to [email protected] is worth a morning's work if your startup touches payments, loyalty or agentic commerce.
