AENU funding is one of the clearest signals a European climate-tech startup can earn. Based in Berlin and investing since 2022, AENU is an early-stage VC backing the energy transition, industrial transformation and systemic resilience technologies. It is a self-described Article 9 (SFDR) climate impact fund on a mission it calls #ImpactCapitalism: aligning market-rate financial returns with measurable, additional climate impact. Its advisory entity, AENU Advisor GmbH, has been B Corp-certified since April 2025 with a B Impact score of 127.5.

The headline number: AENU I closed at €170 million in September 2024 — above its €140M target and near its hard cap — focused on seed and Series A climate-tech investments across Northern Europe, spanning the energy transition and the carbon economy. The firm writes initial cheques of EUR 1–5M, follows on up to EUR 10M, and prefers to lead or co-lead with a board seat — a genuinely founder-friendly structure at a stage where climate startups often struggle to find lead investors.

The AENU thesis: #ImpactCapitalism at seed

AENU backs disruptive hardware, software and AI-native solutions across three themes: energy, industrial decarbonisation and systemic resilience. Its impact bar goes beyond pure carbon metrics — the climate impact must be built into the business and additional to what would exist otherwise. Geographically it concentrates on Europe, with focus on DACH, France, the UK and the Nordics. The team blends former unicorn founders (from Forto and TIER/Dott), climate activists from Leaders for Climate Action and investors from Earlybird, Macquarie and Speedinvest — operator DNA matched with institutional investing experience.

Sectors, stages and cheque size

AENU's sweet spot is seed, with pre-seed and early Series A done selectively. Initial tickets run EUR 1–5M with follow-on capacity to EUR 10M, and the firm takes board seats, preferring lead or co-lead roles. Activity through 2024–26 has been brisk: 22 tracked deals in that window, including leading ScyAI's €2M pre-seed in February 2026 and participation in Metris Energy's €4.35M round in September 2026.

Notable portfolio

AENU's own press material names Monta, Entrix, Ember and Trawa as category leaders "accelerating Europe's industrial transition," and founder testimonials from Entrix and Equitable Earth feature on its homepage. Recent verified rounds in the book include GALVANY's €10M seed (June 2026), feld.energy's €10M-plus round (September 2025), Voltfang's €8.8M Series A (October 2024) and alcemy's €9.2M (July 2024)

Programs and perks

AENU runs no formal accelerator. It also operates diversity office hours for underrepresented founders.

How to apply for funding

AENU runs a dedicated official application page, aenu.com/apply-for-investment/, and its message to founders is direct: "We are looking for the game changers that contribute to a diverse portfolio of meaningful technologies. Are you a tech-entrepreneur addressing the climate crisis or advancing social equality? Let's talk! If your startup fits our investment scope, our team will get back to you via email within 1–2 weeks after submitting your pitch." Key named people include founder and CEO Fabian Heilemann — himself a former unicorn founder at Forto — and partner Siobhan Brewster.

Why it matters for founders

Climate-tech founders in Europe face a lead-investor gap at seed: many generalist funds like the theme but won't lead. AENU exists to fill exactly that gap — EUR 1–5M lead cheques from a team of former unicorn founders, with a real application page and a promised 1–2 week response. If your startup decarbonises energy or industry, this should be on your target list.
