a-IDEA — the Association for Innovation Development of Entrepreneurship in Agriculture — is the technology business incubator hosted at ICAR-National Academy of Agricultural Research Management (ICAR-NAARM) in Hyderabad. Since 2014 it has worked only with agriculture and allied-sector ventures — one of India's most focused agri incubators.
Thesis: back agri innovation where the research already exists
a-IDEA's thesis is that India's agricultural research system already produces strong ideas, and what those ideas lack is incubation, mentoring, market access and seed support. Inside ICAR-NAARM, it connects founders with agricultural scientists, research infrastructure and public-sector programmes across 14 agri domains. Its backers include NABARD, the Department of Science and Technology, DPIIT, MSME, MeitY and DBT, Government of India.
Sectors and stages
a-IDEA supports startups in agriculture and allied sectors at idea, incubation and scale-up stages. Its SIDBI Seed Fund Programme at a-IDEA, launched under a collaboration agreement with the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI), places special emphasis on off-farm sectors: post-harvest technology, innovative food technology, supply and value-chain technology, agri-fintech, value addition in fisheries and aquaculture, animal husbandry, and farm mechanisation. Incubation eligibility typically requires an innovative agri idea, a registered entity, relevant team skills, market potential, scalability, focus-area alignment, a viable financial model and social or environmental impact potential.
Fund size and cheque size
a-IDEA does not publish a single fund corpus, so its fund size is not publicly disclosed in fund terms, and seed amounts vary by startup and scheme, with no published standard cheque. Public scale: 370+ startups supported since 2014; flagship AGRI UDAAN has accelerated 80 startups, reported to have raised 120+ crore rupees — as reported in ICAR-NAARM's recruiter guide, not audited investment by a-IDEA itself.
Notable portfolio and activity
a-IDEA's portfolio is its incubated cohort, not a venture portfolio in the usual sense. Flagship AGRI UDAAN, India's first food and agribusiness accelerator, launched in 2015 with CIIE at IIM Ahmedabad and NABARD support. AGRI UDAAN 7.0, launched on 22 August 2024 with NABARD and SBI as key sponsors, selected 17 scale-up-stage startups and held its Demo Day on 26 June 2025 in Bengaluru in the presence of 30+ investors.
Partners and programmes
Beyond AGRI UDAAN, it runs incubation, mentoring, networking and capacity building, partnering formally with external organisations. Its partners include NABARD, SIDBI, SBI and CIIE, and its programmes connect startups with angel investors and venture capitalists through mentoring, mock pitching and Demo Day exposure.
Credits and perks
a-IDEA does not publish a standard cloud-credits package. Its perks are incubation-based: mentoring, networking, access to research and institutional partners, fundraising exposure, and space whose allocation varies by need and availability. Seed support under the SIDBI Seed Fund Programme is available to startups incubated at a-IDEA, subject to that programme's terms.
How to apply for funding
Founders should apply through a-IDEA's official site, aidea.naarm.org.in, when incubation or an AGRI UDAAN call is open, and should also watch ICAR-NAARM announcements for the next cohort. A strong application shows an innovative agri idea, a registered entity, a committed team, market potential and a viable financial model, plus social or environmental impact. Earlier-stage founders should apply for incubation first, building towards AGRI UDAAN's scale-up bar.
Why it matters for founders
For agri founders, a-IDEA offers something generalist incubators cannot: direct access to India's agricultural research system, public-sector backers and agri investors. If your startup is genuinely agricultural, start here.
