Investment thesis
Infuse Ventures is an India-focused early-stage venture fund and ecosystem dedicated to sustainable energy and clean technology. Created through a public-private-academia collaboration and managed by the Centre for Innovation Incubation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE) at IIM Ahmedabad, it was designed to fill the gap in institutional capital for early-stage cleantech companies in India. Its backers included BP, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Government of India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and the Technology Development Board (TDB), making it one of the country's earliest organised efforts to channel risk capital into sustainability. Beyond financing, Infuse works to mobilise global and domestic investors into the sector and to promote best practices in corporate governance and environmental and social sustainability standards among its portfolio companies.
Sectors and stage focus
Infuse supports seed and early-stage enterprises developing new business models across renewable energy, resource efficiency, waste, water and other sustainability-related areas. Investments typically ranged from Rs 1 crore to Rs 3 crore, with the fund taking stakes of between 20% and 30% in its portfolio companies, targeting ventures working on commercially viable clean-energy and resource-efficiency solutions.
Fund size
Infuse announced its initial closing in May 2013 and went on to raise over Rs 110 crores, Rs 35 crore more than its original Rs 75 crore plan. Its partner base extended to corporates and financial institutions including Godrej Industries, ICICI Bank, SIDBI, Bank of India and Union Bank, alongside its founding institutional supporters.
Notable portfolio
Alongside its final close, Infuse announced investments in early-stage enterprises across the sustainability spectrum. REConnect Energy, founded by Vibhav Nuwal and Vishal Pandya, works on renewable energy credit trading, wind power forecasting, electricity trading and energy efficiency services for over 200 customers. Surya Power Magic, founded by Abhilash Thirupathy and Karthik Ravindranath, provides solar-based irrigation solutions for farmers. TESSOL (Thermal Energy Storage Solutions), founded by Rajat Gupta and Rustom Irani, builds thermal-energy storage for the cold chain segment. Revive Electronic Waste offers decentralised end-to-end e-waste management services. Infuse also co-invested with IFC in Ecolibrium Energy, an energy management startup.
Partners
The fund was managed by CIIE at IIM Ahmedabad, with Mohsin Bin Latheef serving as manager for cleantech ecosystem development. The partnership model brought together a business incubator, domestic and global corporates, domestic and international financial institutions and the Government of India.
Programmes and founder perks
Infuse ran the Infuse Venture Accelerator (IVA), a six-month programme at IIM Ahmedabad aimed at very early-stage cleantech startups. The programme combined an eight-day bootcamp with incubation, helping founders bridge gaps, define roadmaps, build teams and accelerate market entry, with seed equity investment of up to $50,000 (around Rs 25 lakh) at the start and follow-on funding of up to $2 million after re-evaluation. Infuse also partnered with the Asian Development Bank, IIT Bombay and TiE Chennai to mentor aspiring cleantech entrepreneurs, alongside hands-on mentoring and networking support for its portfolio.
Why it matters for founders
Infuse Ventures matters less as an active cheque-writer today than as a template: it proved that a public-private-academia fund could professionalise cleantech investing in India before climate tech was fashionable, and its portfolio companies in solar irrigation, cold chain and energy management mapped the commercial pathways today's climate funds still follow. For founders, the lesson is institutional — the accelerator-plus-seed model Infuse pioneered at IIM Ahmedabad is now standard practice across India's university-linked climate funds.
