IITM Unicorn Frontier Fund-I, the deep-tech venture fund launched by IIT Madras together with the IIT Madras Research Park and Unicorn India Ventures, has made a first close of ₹450 crore against a target corpus of ₹1,000 crore including greenshoe. The close was announced by IIT Madras director V. Kamakoti at Sangam 2026, the IIT Madras Alumni Association meet in Bengaluru, in late September 2026, with fresh coverage on 6 October 2026.
The fund was originally structured as ₹600 crore plus a ₹400 crore greenshoe, so the first close puts it nearly halfway to the full target. Alumni commitments alone have crossed ₹150 crore, and a final close is expected in December 2026. The fund has a 10+2 year tenure — the patient capital structure deep tech actually needs.
It is not waiting to deploy. ₹55 crore has already gone into four startups: Hathor (semi-cryogenic rocket engines), Quanstra (single-photon detection and quantum instrumentation), Triolt Energy (lithium-ion cells for drones and fast-charging EVs), and Carbelim (microalgae carbon capture). That is an unusually fast start for a first close.
The fund plans to back roughly 25 startups in total, with a focus on defence, space, semiconductors, robotics, AI and healthtech. The thesis is clear: India's deep-tech founders are coming out of its research institutions, and capital sourced from that same alumni ecosystem can move faster than generalist VC money.
For the broader ecosystem, this is another data point in the institutionalisation of Indian deep-tech funding. Between the National Quantum Mission's participation in deals like QpiAI's and now a dedicated ₹1,000 crore university-anchored fund, the capital stack for hard-tech founders is visibly deepening.
Why it matters for founders
If you are building in defence, space, semiconductors or quantum-adjacent tech, this fund is one to put on your target list — it is designed for long gestation businesses and is deploying quickly. University-anchored funds also reward research-linked founders, so lean on your lab and alumni networks in the pitch. Get on their radar before the December final close.
