IIMK LIVE — the Laboratory for Innovation Venturing and Entrepreneurship — is the business incubator and entrepreneurship development centre of IIM Kozhikode, set up with the support of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. IIMK LIVE funding is one of the most concrete grant-plus-investment routes for Indian deep-tech and social-impact startups: its LIVE SPROUT programme offers up to Rs 20 lakhs as a grant plus up to Rs 50 lakhs of investment for market entry and scaling.

IIMK LIVE funding: thesis and focus

LIVE positions itself as a National Centre of Excellence mandate holder for innovation, new venturing and entrepreneurship — offering strategic mentorship, funding access and a collaborative ecosystem so startups can scale. The portfolio is increasingly deep-tech: applicants need an innovative idea and a proof of concept or prototype, with no hard sector restriction, though official preference lists name social impact, waste and water management, financial inclusion, education, agriculture, biotechnology, healthcare, energy, mobility, defence, space and deep-tech fields.

Seed funding and cheque sizes

The headline numbers are all publicly stated. LIVE SPROUT: up to Rs 20 lakhs as a grant for PoC validation, prototype development and product trials (milestone-based), and up to Rs 50 lakhs of investment via convertible debentures or debt-linked instruments for market entry and scaling. Eligibility: DPIIT-recognised, incorporated within two years, under Rs 10 lakh of prior government support, and at least 51% Indian promoter shareholding. Under DST's NIDHI-SSP, LIVE sanctioned close to Rs 1 crore to three startups in February 2026. The USHUS maritime programme with Cochin Shipyard Limited has sanctioned a cumulative Rs 6.9 crore to 14 startups, including a Rs 2.5 crore pilot grant scheme. DEEP LEAP, backed by Walmart Global Tech, carries a Rs 2.89 crore total outlay with Rs 1.5 crore earmarked for equity investment and seed funding. And SMARTSHREE, with the Ministry of Rural Development and Kudumbashree, offers grants of up to Rs 15 lakhs plus soft loans up to Rs 5 lakhs to women-led micro enterprises in Kerala. One honest caveat from the official FAQ: LIVE's core incubation programme itself promises no seed capital — it is "in the process of developing its own funds"; the money above flows through government schemes and investor networks. Incubation fees run Rs 18,000 per six-month term.

Notable incubated startups

The USHUS maritime cohort includes Neiox Eco Cycle, Fuselage Innovations and Asatrobo Technologies. The incubator is chaired by Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, Director of IIM Kozhikode, with Prof. Ashutosh Sarkar as Executive Director.

Programmes run

The flagship Business Incubation Program, LIVE SPROUT seed funding, DEEP LEAP deep-tech track with Walmart Global Tech, USHUS maritime track with Cochin Shipyard, SMARTSHREE for women-led micro enterprises, the Bouncer advisory panel, and LIVE HIVE co-working spaces in Kozhikode and Kochi.

How to apply for funding

The official route is a formal application through iimklive.org — shortlisted applicants present to a selection committee at the IIMK campus. For queries: [email protected] or 0495 2809669. That is how to get funding from IIMK LIVE: apply on the website with a working prototype and let the committee route you to SPROUT, NIDHI-SSP, DEEP LEAP or whichever scheme fits.

Why it matters for founders

IIMK LIVE is rare among academic incubators: it publishes exact grant and investment figures — up to Rs 20 lakh grant plus up to Rs 50 lakh investment — and runs deep-tech and maritime tracks with serious corporate partners. For prototype-stage founders, it is one of the clearest non-dilutive-to-lightly-dilutive paths in South India.
