IIM Calcutta Innovation Park (IIMCIP) is a not-for-profit Section 8 company under the aegis of IIM Calcutta and a technology business incubator recognised by the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India. Its distinguishing trait among B-school incubators is an explicit social-impact mission alongside commercial incubation.
Scale and track record
Per reporting in The CSR Journal (May 2026), IIMCIP has supported 2,000+ start-ups and seed-funded 136 ventures; its portfolio companies have raised more than Rs 2,000 crore and carry a cumulative valuation of roughly Rs 8,000 crore. Its support stack runs from pre-incubation (idea to prototype) through incubation (prototype to commercialisation) to acceleration (scale-up), supplemented by 190+ hackathons and business-plan contests and 50+ capacity-building programmes for ecosystem enablers. It reports having empowered 470 women-led or women-owned rural enterprises.
Flagship programmes
Smart Fifty – 50 Solutions to Transform India, run with DST and launched on 21 September 2017, hunted for sustainable, motivating, affordable, responsible and transformative innovations; the top 50 ventures each received a INR 4 lakh seed grant. The North-East Accelerator Program drew 100+ applications and selected 20 ventures. In September 2026 IIMCIP entered a Sikkim INSPIRES partnership — a three-year programme targeting 250 start-ups, four district incubation centres and 1,000+ jobs, with at least 40% women-led ventures — and it runs a Social Impact Startup Bootcamp with DICV.
Leadership
Dr Subhrangshu Sanyal is CEO, Prof Ashok Banerjee a director, Dr R. Ramaraj chairman of the board, with Gaurav Kapoor as Chief Business Officer and Pankaj Baruah heading start-up programmes.
Fund size
As an incubator rather than a fund, its corpus is not publicly disclosed.
Smart Fifty — the name compresses its thesis: Sustainable, Motivating, Affordable, Responsible and Transformative. Launched with DST on 21 September 2017, it scouted innovations across smart agriculture, learning, money, sustainability, living and health, with the top 50 ventures each receiving INR 4 lakh in seed grants. The North-East Accelerator Program drew 100+ applications and selected 20 ventures, extending IIMCIP's reach beyond the metros.
The September 2026 Sikkim INSPIRES partnership — a three-year programme for 250 start-ups, four district incubation centres and 1,000+ jobs with at least 40% women-led ventures — shows the model scaling to state-level ecosystem building. A second Social Impact Startup Bootcamp with DICV, themed around Viksit Bharat, adds a corporate-partnered on-ramp for impact founders.
Why it matters for founders
Social-impact founders often fall between commercial accelerators and pure philanthropy. IIMCIP sits exactly in that gap: B-school-grade mentoring and investor access, plus programmes — Smart Fifty, the North-East accelerator, Sikkim INSPIRES — that are designed around inclusion rather than unicorn-hunting.
