Indian Gas Exchange (IGX) — India's first online delivery-based natural gas trading platform — has received approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to launch its initial public offering, per a regulator update on Monday, October 12.

The proposed IPO is entirely an offer for sale (OFS) of up to 1.67 crore equity shares by promoter Indian Energy Exchange (IEX), per the draft red herring prospectus. As there is no fresh issue, IGX will not receive any proceeds — the entire amount goes to IEX, which holds over 47% of IGX and must reduce its stake to 25% in line with regulatory requirements.

IGX filed its preliminary papers in July; SEBI's final observation on October 12 clears the path to the next steps. The company says listing will bring greater visibility, a stronger brand presence and a public market for its shares.

IGX was incorporated in November 2019 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of IEX. Its electronic gas trading platform was inaugurated in June 2020 and it received authorisation from the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) to operate as a gas exchange in December 2020 — running a technology-enabled marketplace for standardised physical delivery-based contracts across hubs connected to India's national gas pipeline network.

Why it matters for founders

The IGX listing is a pure regulatory-driven value unlock — IEX is trimming from 47%+ to 25% and monetising its gas-exchange bet. For infrastructure founders, this is how platform subsidiaries get valued in public: the parent's OFS creates a market price for an asset the market never separately priced.
