Human Capital is a San Francisco venture firm built on an unusual thesis: in technology, talent is the scarcest asset, and the firm that controls access to it wins. Founded by former General Catalyst associate Armaan Ali and Stanford graduate Baris Akis, Human Capital operates as a hybrid organisation — one part VC fund, one part engineering talent agency — deploying capital and building teams "of the highest caliber at scale". Its earliest high-profile backer was CAA founder Michael Ovitz, alongside Qasar Younis, Adam Zoia, and Stephen Ehikian.

Thesis and model

The talent agency arm gives engineers the kind of representation actors have had for decades: outreach on elite university campuses, interview coaching, and negotiation help, free for the engineer — the startup that hires pays a first-year commission. By 2020 the community had grown to 5,000 members, with placements at Brex, Grammarly, and Robinhood. The VC fund sits alongside this engine: there is no mandatory link between the two entities, but the fund likes to back engineers who graduate from the programme and go on to start companies — and the talent pipeline gives the fund a proprietary view into which startups are winning before the rest of the market notices. The model is closest to SignalFire's in tech and Glocap's in finance.

Sectors and stages

Human Capital is stage-agnostic across early stages, from seed through Series A and B, with a focus on founders, teams, and startups that share its builder mindset. Its investment style is operator-led: it prefers to lead rounds only for companies started by members of its own engineer community, while also investing in startups it has recruited for.

Fund size

At the time of its public profile in TechCrunch (2020), the Human Capital VC fund had $210 million in assets under management. The agency company separately raised $15 million from Ovitz, Younis, Zoia, Ehikian, and financial institutions, at a valuation reported to be in the hundreds of millions. Human Capital has not publicly announced a subsequent fund figure, so current AUM is not publicly disclosed.

Notable portfolio

Investments in companies founded by members of its engineer community include Brex, Bolt, and Qualia. The fund has also invested in companies it recruited for, including Livongo, Snowflake, Clumio, and Trackonomy. It has expanded its agency business through acqui-hires, including Khonvo Corporation, a recruitment agency founded by Archit Bhise and Andrew Rising.

Programmes and perks

Human Capital does not run a conventional accelerator or credits programme. Its differentiator is the engineer community itself: members get free career representation and placement at high-growth startups, while portfolio companies get privileged access to a curated pipeline of top engineering talent — arguably the most valuable perk in the venture business. For founders who come out of the community, the fund offers capital paired with recruiting firepower few other firms can match.

Why it matters for founders

Human Capital inverts the usual VC pitch: it does not just write cheques, it staffs your company. If your constraint is hiring elite engineers — and in AI and infrastructure, it usually is — a firm whose entire business is a talent network of thousands of engineers is worth a conversation. Engineers looking to join a breakout startup, or eventually start their own company, can also enter through the agency side, which charges them nothing.
