Startup funding in India is getting a serious debt-financing boost as HSBC reports it has already deployed more than half of its $1 billion loan commitment to Indian startups, within just a year of launching its innovation banking platform. The British lender said demand across consumer technology, e-commerce and enterprise software has been far stronger than expected, and it is open to increasing the allocation.
David Sabow, HSBC's global head of innovation banking, told the Economic Times that the bank has beaten its own targets on loans, deposits and client acquisition. He expects HSBC to add at least 500 clients in India over the next year. HSBC had announced the India launch of HSBC Innovation Banking on 9 October 2025.
The lending so far is spread mostly across consumer tech, B2B, B2C and commerce companies, with some enterprise software exposure. Around 70–80% of the book sits with B2B, B2C, consumer and commerce platforms. Sabow said the bank is unlikely to stop at $1 billion and could raise the capital allocation at some point, describing India and Asia as major strategic focus areas.
Startup funding in India: banks now rival VC cheque sizes
Venture debt has historically been a side dish to equity in India's startup capital stack. HSBC's pace — over $500 million deployed in twelve months — suggests banks now see startup lending as a core growth engine rather than an experiment. For founders, non-dilutive capital of this scale changes fundraising maths: companies with strong unit economics can fund expansion without giving away equity.
The move also signals institutional confidence. HSBC's willingness to consider raising the cap indicates the India startup book is performing, not just originating. Expect rival global and domestic banks to sharpen their own startup lending programmes in response.
