Hornbill Capital is a Mumbai-based investment firm that has become one of the most recognisable names in India's crossover investing scene. Founded in 2014 by Manoj Thakur, the firm advises offshore funds investing in India and the technology sector, and has built its reputation on concentrated, high-conviction bets in Indian companies across both public equities and private markets. The Economic Times has described it as an India-focused fund backed by the Asian private equity firm Orchid Asia.
The firm's thesis is patient, long-horizon capital. Hornbill applies public-market rigour — deep company research, disciplined sizing of entries and exits, and active portfolio and risk management — to private investments, backing category leaders it believes can compound over years rather than quarters. Its investment team covers consumer internet, consumer products, retail, healthcare, auto, insurance, agri-based industries, media, telecom, banking, education and information technology.
Fund size is not publicly disclosed.
Hornbill's private-market record includes some of India's largest recent crossover rounds. It led edtech platform PhysicsWallah's $210 million financing at a $2.8 billion valuation — the largest fundraise in the post-Byju's edtech sector — alongside Lightspeed Venture Partners, with WestBridge Capital and GSV Ventures also participating. In 2025 it led stockbroking platform Dhan's parent Raise Financial Services' $120 million Series B at a $1.2 billion valuation, taking Dhan into India's unicorn club, with MUFG and BEENEXT participating. The firm had earlier submitted a reported $200 million bid for Dhan at a $1.25 billion pre-money valuation. Dhan's co-founder and CEO said the company fielded investment offers of up to $1 billion but deliberately chose a smaller, patient capital pool.
The team is led by Manoj Thakur, who brings 28 years of buy-side experience. He was CEO of Avendus PE Investment Advisors from its inception in 2008 until 2014, delivering consistently superior returns in two close-ended public equity funds, and earlier spent a decade in Hong Kong as an Investment Director at CDPQ — then Canada's largest pension fund — making private equity investments across Asia Pacific, including India. Jagdish Patel, Partner & Finance Director, co-founded the firm in 2014 and previously managed operations as Vice President of GenNext Ventures, the venture capital fund of Reliance Industries and Actis. Executive Directors Monica Joshi and Sahil Desai bring 23 and 19 years respectively of equity research and investment experience.
Hornbill does not publicly advertise any accelerator, founder programme, or cloud-credit scheme.
Why it matters for founders
For Indian founders, Hornbill matters because it is one of the few India-focused investors writing large, patient private cheques with a public-market investor's discipline. It suits category leaders with credible paths to profitability and scale — the Dhan deal shows it will anchor a round and stay the course. Expect deep diligence and long holding periods rather than quick flips.
