Everstone-backed electric bus startup GreenCell Mobility has raised Rs 330 crore ($34.6 million) in an equity round led by Impact Fund Denmark to roll out about 4,500 electric buses currently under deployment.

The Mumbai-based startup, founded in 2019, is eyeing a fleet of more than 5,000 e-buses across 105 cities in India. It currently operates more than 1,200 electric buses — 900 on intra-city routes, 300 under its NueGo brand for inter-city travel and 50 for MSRTC — and runs over 270 charging stations to support its fleet.

Managing director and CEO Devndra Chawla said the equity investment gives the company greater headroom to execute its order book, strengthen service delivery and keep the organisation's pace in line with the size and complexity of its operations.

GreenCell acquires electric buses via contract manufacturing arrangements with vendors and deploys them for intercity and intracity travel. Backed by Eversource Capital (a joint venture between Everstone Capital and Lightsource), it previously raised $37 million from the World Bank's International Finance Corporation and counts British International Investment and Tata Capital among its backers. It operates primarily under the brand NueGo.

The round shows investors backing the operating-platform layer of electric mobility — not just asset financing — as India's electric bus segment draws strong development-finance interest under long-term public transport contracts.

Why it matters for founders

GreenCell's raise proves that institutional capital is now willing to fund the operator layer of EV mobility — fleets, charging, and service delivery — at scale. For EV and clean-mobility founders, the winning pitch is execution on contracted demand, not just the hardware.
