Global Brain is Japan's leading independent venture capital firm, founded in January 1998 in Tokyo by Yasuhiko Yurimoto, a former Citibank and Fuji Bank banker who set out to build a hands-on, entrepreneur-first investor. Unlike the corporate venture arms that dominate Japan's startup funding, Global Brain is independent — and pairs that independence with deep open-innovation ties to some of Japan's biggest companies.

The scale is serious: the firm reports over $2.7 billion in assets under management, with $1.4 billion+ invested across 1,300+ deals, a 450+ active portfolio, and 46 IPOs and 95 M&As to date. Its thesis spans seed to later stage across enterprise software, AI, IoT, fintech and deep tech.

Structurally, Global Brain runs two engines: flagship institutional funds, and corporate CVC vehicles co-managed with Japanese giants including KDDI, SMBC, ANA, Canon, Kyocera and Yamato Holdings. Recent vehicles show the pattern: the KURONEKO Innovation Fund II with Yamato is ¥8 billion, and the TAKANAWA GATEWAY Fund is roughly ¥10 billion over a 10-year term. That corporate network is the real pitch to founders — portfolio companies get introductions and proof-of-concept pathways inside Japan's industrial giants, not just capital.

India entered the picture in December 2020, when the firm announced it would invest in Indian and Chinese early-stage startups from its seventh flagship fund, worth $192 million (¥20 billion). The stated strategy was founder-friendly: co-invest alongside India's top VCs and offer portfolio companies access to Global Brain's Japanese corporate network. The firm entered India about a year ahead of schedule, betting regional startups would increasingly turn to Japan for capital and partnerships.

The India bets so far prove the point. Lokal, the Bengaluru hyperlocal content and classifieds platform founded by Jani Pasha and Vipul Chaudhary in June 2018, raised Rs 120 crore ($14.6 million) in Series B in April 2023 from Global Brain and Sony Innovation Fund, with India Quotient and existing investors participating. Serving tier-II and tier-III users in six Indian languages, Lokal has crossed 40 million downloads across roughly 180 districts, with over Rs 225 crore raised in total.

The second verified India bet is Digantara, the Bengaluru spacetech startup founded in 2020 by Anirudh Sharma, Rahul Rawat and Tanveer Ahmed. In June 2023 it raised a $10 million Series A1 led by Peak XV Partners and Kalaari Capital, with Global Brain participating alongside Campus Fund and the founders of IIFL Wealth. The firm is building a space-based surveillance constellation for space situational awareness, after a $2.5 million seed round from Kalaari in 2021.

Globally, Global Brain's recent highlight is Securitize, the tokenised real-world-assets platform it has backed since 2018, which listed on the New York Stock Exchange in July 2026. For Indian founders, the firm explicitly welcomes outreach even at idea stage; the practical path is a warm introduction through an existing Indian investor, plus a story that benefits from Japanese corporate partnerships.

Why it matters for founders

Global Brain brings something few investors can: independent-VC speed plus a direct line into Japan's corporate giants. Its verified India bets — Lokal's Rs 120 crore Series B and Digantara's $10 million round — show it writes real cheques alongside India's best funds. If your startup could use a Japanese enterprise customer or partner, this is the Tokyo firm to know.
