The firm

General Catalyst is an American venture capital firm founded in 2000 by Joel Cutler and David Fialkow, and headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts. With offices in San Francisco, New York, London, Berlin and Bangalore, it manages over $43 billion in assets (December 2024), making it one of the largest venture platforms in the world. Globally the firm is led by Hemant Taneja (CEO and managing director), Ken Chenault (chairman and managing director) and Jeannette zu Fürstenberg (president).

Investment thesis

General Catalyst's stated thesis is “radical optimism” — partnering with founders building “powerful, positive change that endures” as a player-coach that works inside its companies, not merely writing cheques. It has centred strategy on applied AI and company-building: deploying alternative capital such as revenue-backed growth funding, building AI-native companies from scratch, and acquiring a US hospital system in 2024 through its Health Assurance Transformation Company (HATCo). It also published a Manifesto for Responsible AI. In India, its thesis is framed around “global resilience”: backing startups that build for global demand, particularly in defence, manufacturing and healthcare.

Sectors & stages

The firm invests across seed, early, growth and pre-IPO stages, spanning AI, enterprise, fintech, consumer, crypto, health assurance and defence. In India it is hunting in AI, healthcare, defence tech, fintech, manufacturing/spacetech and consumer technology, doing “a lot of super early stage” bets alongside larger breakout rounds, and is exploring partnerships with Indian conglomerates to pair startup innovation with large-scale manufacturing.

Fund size & cheque sizes

Globally, General Catalyst manages over $43 billion and closed Fund XII — an $8 billion fund in late 2024. Typical cheques run from $500K at seed to over $100M pre-IPO. At the India AI Impact Summit 2026 it pledged to invest $5 billion in Indian startups over five years, across seed to growth stages.

Notable portfolio

Globally the firm has backed more than 800 companies, including Airbnb, Stripe, Anthropic, Anduril, Helsing, Mistral, Canva, HubSpot, Ramp, Samsara, Legora and Mercor. In India, where it has backed more than a dozen startups, portfolio includes Zepto, CRED (its largest India bet, founded by Kunal Shah), Uni Cards, Spinny, FarMart, STAN, Orange Health, Sarvam (originally via Venture Highway), Nurix (Mukesh Bansal's venture), Magma (supply chain), Raphe mPhibr (drones), AxiTrust and Pronto.

People & India presence

General Catalyst entered India in force in 2024 by merging with Delhi NCR-based early-stage firm Venture Highway. The combined India operation is led by Neeraj Arora (managing director and India CEO, founder of Venture Highway), alongside partners such as Akarsh Shrivastava (who joined from Elevation Capital), and it operates out of Bangalore.

Programs & accelerators

General Catalyst does not run a public accelerator. Its “programmes” are company-building vehicles: HATCo (the Summa Health transformation initiative), executives-in-residence-led startup creation efforts, and its Responsible AI commitments. Founders engage it via introductions and direct outreach.

Credits & perks

No formal credits or perks programme is publicly documented for portfolio or prospective companies.

Why it matters for founders

With a $5 billion India pledge, one of the deepest global balance sheets in venture, and a thesis centred on defence, manufacturing, healthcare and applied AI, General Catalyst is the rare mega-fund actively hunting in India from seed onwards. If you are building in AI, deep tech or hard industry with global ambition — and want a hands-on, player-coach investor with conglomerate and cross-border links — it belongs at the top of your target list.
