Founder Institute funding is not a VC cheque — it is the world's largest pre-seed company builder, with Indian chapters offering idea-stage founders a structured route to a fundable company. Founded in 2009 in Palo Alto by Adeo Ressi and Jonathan Greechan, the Founder Institute (FI) operates in 200 cities across 100 countries, with 9,000+ graduate companies, an estimated $20 billion+ portfolio value, $2 billion+ raised by graduates, 200+ exits and 40,000+ mentors.
Thesis
FI's thesis: company-building is a learnable, structured process. A mentor-led curriculum takes idea-stage founders — even those still employed or without an idea — through build-validate-launch so they graduate with an incorporated, fundable company. The Equity Collective aligns mentors and local leaders with outcomes, with 60% of returns flowing back to the local ecosystem.
Sectors & stages
Sector-agnostic technology startups, now branded AI-native company building with no technical co-founder required. Pre-seed and idea-stage only: aspiring founders, solo founders, small teams, employed professionals (part-time — no need to quit), and founders of pre-funding established companies.
Fund size & cheque size
FI is an accelerator, not a fund — no fund size or cheque. Founders pay an entrance fee varying by city and deadline: $399 for Hyderabad Fall 2026, fully refundable before kickoff, 75% before Session 3; teams of 2–3 pay 1.5×, teams of 4–5 pay 2×. Two-thirds through, founders pledge 2.5% of future equity as a warrant (0.5% mentors, 1% local leaders, 1% FI), activating only at a $100,000+ qualified financing ($25,000 if joining a qualifying programme like Y Combinator). No board seat or voting rights; it dissolves if the company fails. Short FI Bootcamps carry no equity.
Notable portfolio
Headline graduate: Udemy, which raised $421 million in its October 2021 NASDAQ IPO. Others named include Oddbox, TransTRACK, SleepUp, DyeConverter and Zuma Internet. FI reports 72% of graduates still operating after two years.
Partners / team
Adeo Ressi (Chairman) and co-founder Jonathan Greechan lead globally. South Asia: regional director Ayami Wanasinghe and venture partner Sanju Peramuna Arachchi. India chapters: Bengaluru (2013, led by Naveen Lakkur and Srikanth Bhagavat), Mumbai (2021), and Hyderabad Fall 2026 directed by Sujit Jagirdar (former CEO & CIO, T-Hub) with the IIIT Hyderabad CIE team.
Programs & perks
The flagship FI Agentic Program: 10 sessions plus Demo Day, weekly mentor feedback, a per-startup Playbook and a Pitch Gym. FI Bootcamps (Startup Ideation, Vibe Coding, AI Productivity) are short, equity-free courses. FI runs 1,000+ free events a year (750,000+ attendees); enrolled founders get one Bootcamp free, 50% off others, and lifetime alumni support.
How to apply for funding from Founder Institute
Apply via fi.co (Apply Now), your nearest chapter page — e.g. fi.co/hyderabad — or fi.co/join; Mumbai's route was published as fi.co/apply/mumbai. Take the Predictive Admissions Test (aptitude + personality), then pay the chapter's entrance fee. Attending free events at fi.co/events is the published way to meet local leaders first. Hyderabad's Fall 2026 cohort runs 3 October–12 December 2026, 100% in-person, with IIIT Hyderabad's CIE.
Why it matters for founders
For an Indian founder at the idea stage — especially one still employed — FI is one of the few structured global programmes with live chapters in Bengaluru, Mumbai and Hyderabad, and a warrant model costing nothing unless you raise. The free events are a no-cost way to test fit before the entrance fee.
