Flagship Pioneering is not a venture fund in the conventional sense. For over 25 years it has operated as a scientific innovation engine that invents and builds companies from scratch — originating breakthrough platforms in human health, sustainability and AI, then founding and funding the companies that commercialise them. Its most famous creation is Moderna, the mRNA company it founded well before the pandemic made mRNA a household word. The firm is run by Moderna co-founder Noubar Afeyan.

Overview and thesis

Flagship's model is venture creation: its team of scientist-entrepreneurs develops first-kind platforms and launches companies around them, committing capital at origination rather than waiting for founders to arrive with pitch decks. AI — including generative AI — lies at the heart of its current strategy. Its newest creation, iris labs, launched on 6 October 2026 with an initial $20 million commitment from Flagship to build personal-AI products for psychological wellbeing, starting with iris chat, an AI thought partner available over iMessage and RCS.

Sectors and stages

Flagship creates companies across human health, sustainability and artificial intelligence, with deep work in therapeutics, life-science tools, agriculture and climate. It operates at the very earliest stage of company formation — often at inception — and its new capital is earmarked to support the development of around 25 startups.

Fund size

Flagship Pioneering Fund VIII raised $3.6 billion in total: $2.6 billion to support company creation and $1 billion earmarked for strategic partnerships. The commitments take the total raised by the firm to $6.4 billion since 2021. A separate side fund backs sector-specific partnerships, following Flagship's wide-ranging $7 billion alliance with Pfizer — focused on developing up to 10 candidates from Flagship's portfolio — plus partnerships with Samsung, Thermo Fisher Scientific and Novo Nordisk, the last of which produced deals with portfolio companies Omega Therapeutics and Cellarity.

Notable portfolio

Flagship's originating portfolio includes Moderna, plant-breeding technology company Inari (backed from its creation in 2016), Tessera Therapeutics, Sail Biomedicines, Omega Therapeutics, Cellarity and the newly launched iris labs.

Partners and team

The firm is led by founder and CEO Noubar Afeyan, who co-founded Moderna. Its model runs on “origination partners” — scientist-entrepreneurs who create companies inside the firm, such as Armen Mkrtchyan, an origination partner and MIT PhD who is co-founder and CEO of iris labs.

Programs and resources

Beyond capital, Flagship offers its companies the firm's own platform for scientific exploration, regulatory and clinical expertise, and strategic-partnership channels with pharma majors that can validate new technologies early. Its strategic partnerships let portfolio companies pilot their platforms with multinationals while accelerating their development programmes — a rare bridge between venture creation and Big Pharma scale.

Why it matters for founders

Flagship is the address for scientists and founders working on genuinely first-of-a-kind platforms in health, sustainability and AI. If you have a breakthrough idea but not yet a company, Flagship's origination model will help build it with you — and its Pfizer, Samsung and Thermo Fisher partnerships can carry your science into the world far faster than a solo startup could.
