Investment thesis
FJ Labs calls its approach "angel investing at venture scale." The New York firm, founded in 2015 by serial entrepreneur Fabrice Grinda (co-founder of global classifieds giant OLX) and his longtime co-investor Jose Marin, focuses on marketplaces and network-effect businesses — and claims the world's largest portfolio of marketplace startups, with more than 30 investments that have become unicorns.
Sectors and stages
FJ Labs is stage-agnostic, with most investments at seed and Series A, though it also runs an opportunity-style "Series B and beyond" fund. Its circle of competence is unambiguous: e-commerce, mobile software, consumer and B2B marketplaces, and businesses whose value compounds as users join. It is also one of the most active early-stage investors in the world — PitchBook data puts its investment count above 2,000.
Fund size
FJ Labs raised $260 million across two funds — a pre-seed fund and a Series B-and-beyond opportunity fund — according to TechCrunch. Its limited partners include family offices, institutional investors and founders of technology giants such as LinkedIn, PayPal, Supercell, TransferWise, MongoDB and Wayfair. Grinda has described the firm as deliberately unlike a traditional VC: it does not lead rounds, does not price, and does not take board seats.
Notable portfolio companies
The firm's own site names Alibaba, Coupang, Flexport, Delivery Hero, Shipbob, Properly, Wallapop and Rappi among its investments, with Betterment also among its well-known bets. The portfolio is global, and the firm looks for founders with demonstrated passion, grit, tenacity and the ability to execute.
Key partners
Founding partners Fabrice Grinda and Jose Marin lead the firm, which has grown from a two-person outfit to a team of more than 30 people, including eight investors and four full partners. Grinda, ranked among the world's top angel investors, also serves as executive chairman of FJ Labs studio companies.
Programmes and incubation
FJ Labs does not run an accelerator and has no public credits or perks programme. It does, however, operate a studio that incubates its own companies — most recently Midas, a regulated tokenisation platform for on-chain treasury yield that launched an $8.75 million round with crypto investors including Framework Ventures, BlockTower and HV Capital. For founders, the practical programme is the investment process itself: decisions are made after two one-hour meetings within a week, powered by extraordinary pattern recognition across thousands of marketplace deals.
Why it matters for founders
If you are building a marketplace or network-effect business, there is arguably no investor that has seen more of them than FJ Labs. The firm does not lead and does not take board seats — so pitch them as a fast, high-signal co-investor, and come prepared: you get two one-hour meetings and one week, not a months-long courtship.
