Startup funding in India continues to flow into applied AI, and the latest cheque to cross the line is for frontline hiring. Firstwork has raised $15 million in a Series A round led by Earlybird Venture Capital, taking its total funding to $20 million since its 2024 launch.
What Firstwork does
Founded in 2024 by Vardhan Kapoor and Shubham Choudhary, Firstwork builds an applied AI platform for frontline workforce operations. It automates the stretch between a candidate accepting a job offer and starting their first shift: document verification, background and right-to-work checks, onboarding, training coordination and compliance management. The platform integrates with existing HR, payroll and screening systems, and the company says it serves more than 150,000 frontline workers a month.
Who backed the round
Earlybird Venture Capital led the round, with participation from Legion VC, Deel Ventures, Gradient and Y Combinator. Other backers named in coverage include SOMA Capital, 468 Capital and Houghton Street Ventures. Deel is both a customer and, through Deel Ventures, an investor.
What the money is for
Firstwork plans to grow its applied AI, AI research, engineering and go-to-market teams, expand its presence across the United States and Europe, and extend its AI agents into more parts of frontline workforce operations. It is also setting up a London base to support European clients, while keeping a strong technical hub in Bengaluru.
The bet is simple: in high-turnover frontline roles, the gap between offer and first shift is where employers lose people. Automating that window, rather than just screening CVs, is where Firstwork says its agents earn their keep.
Why it matters for founders
Frontline hiring is a volume game with brutal drop-off. If your product removes friction between offer and day one, employers will pay for it — and investors are now funding that wedge specifically. Build for one painful workflow, prove it with activation numbers, then expand.
