A Kochi deep-tech startup just made defence history. EyeROV, a marine robotics and AI company, has developed and delivered two EyeROV TROUT military-grade underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) systems to the Indian Navy — the first delivery under the Navy's order for five TROUT systems, as reported on October 7, 2026.

TROUT is the first military-grade ROV built in India — designed, developed, manufactured and qualified to military standards entirely domestically. It is a rugged, mission-ready underwater robotic platform built for mission-critical naval and subsea operations: underwater inspection, surveillance and reconnaissance, search and recovery, detection, and robotic intervention.

The platform was developed under the iDEX DISC 7 SPRINT challenge, the Defence Ministry's initiative for strategically important indigenous technologies for the armed forces, with the Indian Navy as the nodal agency. TROUT went through extensive field trials and system-level validation, plus the Directorate of Quality Assurance (Naval) framework and military-standard environmental stress screening.

"What started as an ambitious indigenous engineering programme has now matured into a mission-ready underwater robotic platform for the Indian Navy," said Johns T. Mathai, CEO and Co-founder. CTO and Co-founder Kannappa Palaniappan P called the deployment "an important validation of the technology and of our indigenous engineering capabilities."

The delivery feeds directly into the Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India vision — strategic autonomy in underwater robotics, built at home.

Why it matters for founders

iDEX keeps producing proof points: a Kochi startup can now sell military-grade underwater robotics to the Indian Navy. For deep-tech founders, the lesson is sharp — India's defence procurement pipeline (iDEX challenges, SPRINT, assured orders) is one of the most dependable go-to-market paths for hard-tech in the country. Build for the mission, qualify rigorously, and the Navy becomes your reference customer.
