Startup funding in India has a new near-unicorn in the making: Equal AI, the AI-native caller-ID app taking on Truecaller, is seeking fresh funding at a valuation of up to $1 billion — and targeting 15 million monthly active users by March, a roughly fourfold jump from current levels.

Launched about a year ago, Equal AI has already raised over $42 million across two rounds led by Prosus Ventures. The company is expanding beyond caller ID into AI messaging, positioning itself as an AI communication layer rather than a single-feature utility.

Where the money goes

Most of the new capital is earmarked for AI infrastructure and user acquisition, with the remainder going to product development and hiring. That allocation tells its own story: the fight against Truecaller's 500M+ global users — most of them in India — will be won on distribution economics and on-device AI, not just features.

Equal AI's pitch is that legacy caller-ID is a database business, while it is building an AI business: contextual understanding of calls, spam filtered by models rather than lists, and messaging woven into the same experience. If the $1 billion valuation lands, it would join a small club of AI-first consumer apps valued at unicorn scale before age two.

Why it matters for founders

Equal AI has raised $42 million in a year by attacking a category everyone thought was settled — caller ID. The lesson for founders: incumbents with 500M users are still beatable when the technology paradigm shifts. AI-native rebuilds of 'boring' utilities are one of the most fundable ideas in India right now.
