London-based AI voice company ElevenLabs plans to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in India, co-founder Mati Staniszewski told Reuters — one of the largest AI commitments to the country by a Western lab this year.
What the money is for
The investment will fund local teams, model development and work on Indian languages — a critical frontier, given India's 22 official languages and hundreds of dialects. Voice AI that truly works in Hindi, Tamil, Bengali and beyond could unlock everything from customer support to content creation for hundreds of millions of users.
Staniszewski added that the company is open to merger and acquisition targets in India, though he declined to name any — putting every Indian voice-AI startup on notice, in the best possible way.
India's voice moment
The announcement comes as Indian voice AI heats up: GreyLabs AI raised funding this same week, and Gnani.ai launched an AI-generated digital human. With global labs now building locally, Indian founders get both fiercer competition and a much deeper acquirer and partner bench.
Why it matters for founders
When ElevenLabs says it will spend hundreds of millions on Indian languages, it validates an entire category — and signals acquisition appetite.
