Elevation Capital is the quintessential Indian early-stage VC: investing in the country since 2002 (as SAIF Partners India), spun out as an independent firm in 2011 and rebranded as Elevation Capital in 2020. Its own site puts the scoreboard bluntly: it has partnered with 13 unicorns from seed or Series A, and its portfolio companies have created $75B — roughly 25% — of India's total tech market capitalisation. The firm is headquartered in Delhi-NCR and Bengaluru.
Thesis and focus areas
Elevation's motto is "Built for the Audacious": it backs founders with a big, contrarian view from day one, and only ever backs one startup per vertical. Sectors include consumer tech, consumer brands, fintech and financial services, enterprise AI, frontier tech and healthcare, with a declared preference for seed and Series A. The firm describes its edge as an in-house Founder Success team — domain leaders in finance, marketing, AI adoption, corporate development, talent, technology and legal who work with portfolio companies from day one.
Fund size and cheque size
In 2022 Elevation Capital closed Fund VIII at $670M, then the largest early-stage India fund of its kind, following Fund VII at $400M (2020) and three earlier funds of $350M each. The firm has deployed nearly $2B across more than 150 companies since 2011. At the time of the Fund VIII close, the firm said it would write early cheques of roughly $2-5M, with total commitment per company going up to $25M over its lifecycle.
Notable portfolio
Elevation was the first institutional investor in a remarkable run of Indian champions: Paytm (payments, where the firm invested over $100M across the journey), Swiggy (food delivery, backed in 2015 on a logistics-first vision), Meesho (e-commerce, partnered through a pivot to become India's largest true e-commerce marketplace), Urban Company (home services, backed at MVP stage), FirstCry (baby products), ShareChat (backed when the team was still in college), Acko (digital-native insurance, backed pre-product), Spinny (used cars), NoBroker (proptech), PlaySimple (gaming, one of India's biggest gaming exits), Unacademy, XpressBees and MakeMyTrip. Consumer bets include SUGAR Cosmetics and Chaayos.
Partners
The firm is led by co-managing partners Ravi Adusumalli and Mukul Arora, along with managing directors Mridul Arora, Deepak Gaur and Mayank Khanduja.
Programs, credits and perks
The signature programme is the Founder Success team — essentially an in-house operating team covering finance, marketing, AI adoption, hiring, tech and legal support for portfolio founders. The firm also runs regular insight content on building audacious companies. No standalone founder credits or perks programme is publicly advertised.
How founders can approach them
Elevation markets itself with the line "never too early to get in touch" and its "one of one, from day one" ethos means it prizes bold, first-principles thinking over traction. Founders pitching should be ready to explain why their view is contrarian — the firm's best-known bets (Urban Company at MVP, Meesho when e-commerce looked overcrowded) were all made against conventional wisdom.
Why it matters for founders
Elevation Capital is the closest thing India has to an early-stage specialist with a proven seed-to-unicorn playbook — and it actively wants founders who look unfashionable today. If you're pre-traction with a genuinely audacious idea, this is one of the highest-conviction first calls on the list.
