Elemental Impact funding works differently from a typical VC cheque: it is catalytic capital from a nonprofit investing platform, paired with project-development expertise and deep community partnerships, designed to bridge climate technologies from pilot to commercial scale. Founded in 2012 and headquartered in Honolulu, Hawaii (formerly known as Elemental Excelerator), it has backed 160+ companies and deployed more than 150 projects — and since 2026 it runs a rolling application cycle rather than annual cohorts, investing as it finds the right entrepreneurs.

The investment thesis

Elemental invests in climate technologies "at the intersection of climate x equity": energy, industry, transportation, built environment, water, food, agriculture and nature. The core insight is the "missing middle" — breakthrough climate solutions die between first deployment and commercial adoption, and flexible catalytic capital can de-risk projects so follow-on investors pile in. The numbers the platform reports: portfolio companies are 2.5x more likely to succeed than others in the climate ecosystem, have created 18,100 jobs, unlock 110x for every dollar Elemental invests, and have avoided 22M lifetime metric tons of CO₂.

How they invest: three tracks

Elemental now offers three funding routes. The Strategy Track serves early-stage companies — typically pre-seed or seed with at least three full-time staff — over roughly nine months, usually via SAFE, convertible note or milestone-linked investment. The Project Track is designed for Series A and beyond, supporting first-of-a-kind or early-commercial deployments over 12–18 months with coaching and catalytic capital tied to milestones. The Data Center Innovation Initiative — run with Microsoft, Google, Meta and Amazon — will invest $500,000 to $5 million per project in up to 10 technology startups through 2027, backed by philanthropic commitments of up to $50M. Investment amounts outside the initiative are evaluated case by case. As a nonprofit, all proceeds go back to supporting future entrepreneurs.

Notable portfolio companies

Elemental's first 2026 investments were BurnBot and Pono Energy, alongside follow-ons in Bedrock Energy and Molg. A recent $18.6M cohort included Artyc, Aspiring Materials, Fleet Robotics, Foray Bioscience, Klim, MetOx, Noon Energy, Plantible, Seabound, SuperCircle, Symbium and Verdi. Earlier wins include Fervo Energy ("Elemental's early support helped Fervo scale with intention," says CEO Tim Latimer), Glacier, SunFi and Nth Cycle — which raised a $12.5M Series A the year after Elemental's first investment.

Support beyond the cheque

Every investment is paired with coaches across fundraising, market intelligence, policy, project development, sales and storytelling. Founders join a CEO & Leadership Summit for ~100 entrepreneurs and an investor network of 2,000+ investors, insurers, financiers and customers.

How to apply for funding

Elemental keeps its applications open year-round. Apply through the open application form at elementalimpact.com/funding-opportunities, or refer a company by emailing [email protected]. Eligibility: for-profit, stand-alone companies with at least 3 full-time employees and an operating prototype. Relocation is not required; Elemental funds companies worldwide. Strong applications show product-market fit, a specific project the funding can accelerate, and a team aligned with Elemental's mission.

Why it matters for founders

Elemental Impact is the rare funder that treats deployment — not demo day — as the product. If your climate startup is stuck in the missing middle between pilot and first commercial project, its catalytic capital plus project-development muscle and a 2,000-strong investor network is a combination no conventional accelerator offers.
