Earlybird Venture Capital is one of Europe's oldest and most established early-stage tech investors. Founded in 1997 in Berlin by Dr Hendrik Brandis and Dr Christian Nagel, the pan-European firm manages €2.5 billion in assets across its fund streams, with a track record of 9 IPOs and 41 trade sales. It describes itself as the partner from before the breakthrough — backing Pre-Seed to Series A founders and supporting them through to IPO.
Thesis and focus
Earlybird runs two core strategies. The flagship tech arm backs tech-enabled businesses across software, infrastructure and deep tech; Earlybird Health concentrates on life-science innovation driven by data, covering digital health, diagnostics, medical devices and biopharma. Fund focus today centres on AI applications, software infrastructure and foundation models, and DeepTech and hardware. The firm has been an early mover in deep tech more than once — backing Isar Aerospace before European space tech was fashionable and Marvel Fusion when nuclear fusion was still largely academic. It also tracks defence-tech and dual-use technology discussions, according to 2026 industry coverage.
Fund and stage
In April 2026 Earlybird closed its largest fund to date: Fund VIII at €360 million, supported by major institutions and family offices, many of them LPs across several fund generations. It has already invested from the fund in companies including Black Forest Labs, SpAItial AI, Sintra AI, Arago, Porters and Rivia. Earlier vehicles include Digital West Fund VII (capped at €350 million, 2022) and the Earlybird Health fund of €173 million (2024). The firm positions itself as the day-one partner: roughly 20% Pre-Seed, 60% Seed, 20% Series A, with initial ticket sizes up to €12 million and around 20 new investments a year. Fund VIII also introduced what the firm calls a perpetual active ownership model, where only active partners own the firm and ownership passes meritocratically to the next generation.
Portfolio highlights
Earlybird's portfolio spans some of Europe's defining tech companies: N26, the digital bank; Trendyol; Snyk; Peak Games; Isar Aerospace; Aleph Alpha; Marvel Fusion; SimScale; OneFootball; Aiven; Finmid; and HiveMQ. The firm's overall portfolio runs to more than 400 investments. Its exit record — 9 IPOs and 41 trade sales — is among the strongest of any Europe-based early-stage investor.
People and programs
The investment team is led by founders Brandis and Nagel alongside partners Paul Klemm, Tim Rehder and Dr Andre Retterath, who leads the AI and infrastructure practice. The firm keeps teams on the ground across Europe's major hubs, with offices in Berlin, Munich, London and Milan, plus health operations around Cologne. Founders get financial resources, strategic support and access to an international network and capital markets — with a specialist health team for life-science founders.
Why it matters for founders
For European early-stage founders in AI, infrastructure, deep tech or digital health, Earlybird is a rare combination: a 1997 vintage brand with fresh firepower (€360 million in Fund VIII) and an appetite for scientific risk. Its track record of backing technically ambitious companies long before they were fashionable makes it a natural first conversation for deep-tech teams, including Indian founders building in Europe.
