The firm

Draper Associates is Tim Draper's seed-stage VC firm, founded in 1985 and headquartered in San Mateo, California. Its site calls it a "global venture capital firm for world-shaping companies" — 400+ companies backed, 40+ years of investing, 60+ unicorns, rhinos and hectocorns, and $2.3B in assets under management. The motto: "We back the bold before the world believes."

Draper started it in 1985 with a $6M loan from the US Small Business Administration's SBIC programme; five of those companies went public, including PTC. John Fisher (1991) and Steve Jurvetson (1994) joined, and by 1997 the firm had become Draper Fisher Jurvetson (DFJ) — behind era-defining bets on Tesla, SpaceX, Skype, Baidu and Hotmail, and the 1999 DFJ ePlanet fund, the first global VC fund raised out of Silicon Valley. Draper left DFJ in 2013, but had already relaunched Draper Associates in 2008 as an angel operation — with Andy Tang and Billy Draper — backing Twitch, Thumbtack, DocuSign, Cruise Automation, Carta and Robinhood. In 2015 the firm opened to outside limited partners for the first time with Draper Associates Fund 5, an early-stage fund that closed at $190 million; in 2025 it celebrated 40 years and launched Draper Associates Fund 8.

Thesis and sweet spot

Earliest stages — pre-seed, seed and Series A — under Draper's "Global Silicon Valley" idea: transformative technology can come from anywhere. Current theses on draper.vc: AI and robotics; Bitcoin and blockchain (DeFi, tokenised assets, decentralised infrastructure); longevity and precision medicine; aerospace and the "multi-planetary economy"; and outright unconventional ideas like de-extinction and brain-computer interfaces. Earlier fund marketing named FinTech, GovTech, healthcare, education, insurance and logistics as "ripe for transformation". Generalist on paper; the centre of gravity is audacious, world-shaping technology.

Notable portfolio

The site's portfolio pages name Skype, Baidu, Tesla, SpaceX, Twitch, Hotmail, Coinbase, Robinhood, Carta, DocuSign, Webflow, AngelList, Cruise, Iceye, Colossal Biosciences, Oklo, Polymarket, Ledger, Xanadu and Twilio — and Tim Draper has funded over 50 unicorns from the seed stage.

People

Tim Draper is Founder and Managing Partner — Stanford and Harvard Business School graduate, prominent Bitcoin advocate (he won the 2014 US Marshals Bitcoin auction), Forbes Midas List name. Andy Tang is Partner — founding partner of Draper Dragon, chair of Draper University's executive committee, and director of VCx, an invite-only alliance of family offices; he has seeded over 15 unicorns. Principals include Maxime Bucaille (blockchain and crypto, heads the New York office) and Michelle Kwok (healthcare and biotech); venture partners include Tyrone Lee (deep tech, space) and Matt Harris (ex-Blackstone).

Programs, credits and perks

The distinction matters: Draper University (the Draper University of Heroes) is not the fund — it is a separate San Mateo accelerator founded by Tim Draper, which has trained 6,000+ founders from 104 countries. On the fund side, the BitcoinFi Accelerator (founded 2024) backs Bitcoin-focused crypto startups, and founders can pitch on Meet the Drapers, the firm's global pitch show, where the unicorn Boxabl was discovered. The Draper Venture Network extends the firm's reach into an alliance of affiliated global funds.

Why it matters for founders

Draper Associates is one of the few seed funds with four decades of proof that "too early, too weird" can win — Skype, Tesla, SpaceX and Coinbase all looked improbable at entry. Building something world-shaping in AI, crypto, space or longevity? This is the firm that has historically written the cheque before the consensus arrives. Come with a bold, global-scale thesis.
