Day One Ventures is a San Francisco-based early-stage venture capital firm founded in 2018 by Masha Bucher (née Drokova), its Founder and General Partner. The firm's investment thesis is unusual: it bridges innovative technology with society through storytelling, art and culture, backing mission-driven founders with customer obsession in their DNA and accelerating the mass adoption of the technologies they create.

The firm's defining differentiator is communications. Rather than treating PR as an add-on, Day One runs an in-house communications operation that spearheads press and marketing for its portfolio companies — tier-one media launches, executive hiring announcements and introductions to journalists. Founder testimonials on the firm's site describe the team working around the clock on seed-round announcements and stealth launches, a service that would otherwise cost a startup hundreds of thousands of dollars. TechCrunch has dubbed it the VC that charges $0 for PR.

On sectors, the firm backs founders across AI, fintech, climate & energy, enterprise, future of work, consumer, deep tech and web3. With Fund III, announced in June 2024, the firm added a focus on what Bucher calls "Future of Human" — technologies at the crossroads of history and technological progress, with a deeper integration of art and culture alongside storytelling and PR. The firm invests at pre-seed and seed stages, entering as an early, high-conviction partner.

Fund size is publicly stated. Day One raised Fund I at $20 million, followed by Fund II at $50 million, and announced Fund III at $150 million in June 2024. Bucher told TechCrunch the firm grew from $11 million under management to just over $450 million in AUM in roughly five years.

The portfolio is deep. Day One says it has backed 12 unicorns early, with 30+ exits and one IPO (Terran Orbital). Notable portfolio companies include World (Sam Altman and Alex Blania's identity-as-public-utility project), you.com (Richard Socher's AI search engine), Symbolica, Superhuman, Remote, DuckDuckGo, Invisible, MSCHF, Rainmaker, Orchid, Valar Atomics and Truebill, which exited to Rocket Companies in 2021. A majority of the firm's portfolio companies have minority or women founders, per the firm.

The team is led by Masha Bucher, a Forbes 30 Under 30 honouree who started a social media agency at 18, served as VP of Communications at Acronis and led communications at VC firm Runa Capital before founding a PR studio that worked with Houzz, HotelTonight and Gett. She is joined by Sanjiv Sanghavi, ClassPass co-founder, who joined in 2022 as a partner investing in climate tech; Avik Wadhwa, Investor; and Sean Whitney, Operating Partner.

On programmes and perks, Day One does not run a standalone accelerator or a public credits programme; instead, its in-house communications engine — press launches, executive team building, customer introductions and ongoing media counsel — is the bundled programme that arrives with the cheque. Standalone perks, credits or cohort programmes are not publicly disclosed.

Why it matters for founders

If your startup's success depends on narrative — launch timing, tier-one press, hiring momentum — Day One Ventures effectively bundles a top-tier PR firm with an early-stage cheque. The firm writes early cheques across AI, fintech, climate, consumer and deep tech, and founders consistently cite its communications engine as worth more than the capital itself. Come to them with a mission-driven story and customer-obsessed culture, and you may get the loudest megaphone in early-stage venture.
