Creandum was founded in 2003 in Stockholm by Staffan Helgesson, in the wake of the dotcom crash, on a simple conviction: global category-defining companies could be built from Europe. Two decades on, the firm says one in six of its early-stage investments has turned into a billion-dollar company — a hit rate that has attracted top US university endowments, pension funds and foundations as limited partners.

The firm closed its seventh fund, Creandum VII, at €500 million in 2024 — an oversubscribed raise completed in just twelve weeks, with more than half the capital coming from US investors. The fund targets 35 to 40 seed and Series A investments across all sectors over two to three years, with roughly $2 billion in assets under management and nearly 150 companies backed to date.

Creandum's motto on its own site captures the style: "We don't make deals, we make commitments." The firm works as an equal partnership — equal carry, equal votes — with a strong promote-from-within culture, and partners with hard-working founding teams early, betting on great products rather than sector fashions. Sectors span fintech, consumer, climate, health and SaaS, and the firm operates from Stockholm, Berlin, London and San Francisco.

  • Spotify — one of the earliest institutional backers of the streaming giant
  • Klarna — early bet on the payments leader
  • iZettle — acquired by PayPal for $2.2 billion
  • Depop — acquired by Etsy for $1.6 billion
  • Bolt — the European mobility champion
  • Trade Republic — Europe's commission-free brokerage
  • Neo4j — the graph database company
  • Pleo, Taxfix, Kry, Epidemic Sound — further category leaders

Key general partners include founder Staffan Helgesson, Johan Brenner, Fredrik Cassel, Simon Schmincke, Carl Fritjofsson and Peter Specht. The firm has deliberately capped fund sizes to keep returns disciplined — a consistency its LPs, including five of the eight largest US university endowments, continue to back fund after fund.

Why it matters for founders

European founders raising seed or Series A should know Creandum first: it is the firm with the longest track record of turning European seed bets into global category winners. Expect a high bar — the firm speaks to only a few hundred companies a year and backs a handful — and a partner that commits through the decade-long journey.
