Colossa Ventures is a SEBI-registered independent venture capital management company based in Mumbai, founded in 2022 by Ashu Suyash — former MD and CEO of CRISIL, and former India country head of Fidelity International — and Vandana Rajadhyaksha, former investment director at ICICI Ventures and director of investments at Aditya Birla Private Equity. It invests exclusively in 'WomenFirst' businesses: companies founded or co-founded by women, or where women are the primary beneficiaries.

The thesis

Colossa's conviction, stated on its website, is that investing in women-first businesses makes strong business sense: women make over 75% of household decisions, 18% of Indian unicorns have at least one female founder, and women-founded companies succeed at rates on par with male-founded ones while remaining underfunded. Its investment platform runs on a proprietary 3C framework — Capital, Capability and Confidence — going beyond the cheque with mentorship, market linkages, capability building and community support for women entrepreneurs. Category focus spans SaaS and deep tech, fintech, healthcare, climate and cleantech, and consumer.

Fund and stage

Its maiden vehicle, the Colossa WomenFirst Fund, targets a corpus of INR 500 crore and marked a first close of INR 100 crore (about $12 million) in March 2024, as reported by YourStory. First-close investors included SIDBI, Dr Ranjan Pai's family office and the Shriram Ownership Trust, with the Financial Express also reporting participation from HNIs including Bain Capital India chairperson Amit Chandra and Zia Mody. The fund invests at the pre-Series A stage and beyond in fast-growing, purpose-led, women-centric businesses across its five focus categories.

Portfolio highlights

Colossa's listed investments include FS Life, Lissun — an integrated-therapy clinic network for children with neurodevelopmental disorders backed by a proprietary AI platform — Morphing Machines, a fabless semiconductor company building a runtime-reconfigurable many-core architecture for AI workloads, and FinReach, a credit-guarantee platform expanding formal credit access for underserved MSMEs. Its most publicised deal is Vioma Motors: Colossa led the electric two-wheeler startup's pre-Series A round with a 10% stake, backing its metal-air battery technology developed to deliver around 400 km of range. The portfolio also includes names such as Exposome, Ahammune, Serigen Mediproducts and Meolis.

People and programs

The investment team includes venture partners Rajesh Krishnamoorthy and Dr Rishika Agarwal, alongside analysts and associates. Colossa's advisory board features Farida Khambata, Ruchi Kalra (OfBusiness and Oxyzo co-founder), Shantanu Deshpande (Bombay Shaving Company founder), Raghu Cavale, Harinarayan Sharma and Shrestha Chowdhury. Its capability partners include IIT Bombay, IIT Madras and Manipal Academy for startup evaluation and resource access, plus Bombay Law Chambers and Hemang Bakshi and Associates for legal and compliance support — a deliberate ecosystem play around its founders.

Why it matters for founders

If your company is founded or co-founded by a woman — or built primarily for women as users or beneficiaries — Colossa Ventures is one of the very few Indian funds whose entire mandate matches your profile, and it comes with an operator ecosystem of IITs, legal partners and a seasoned advisory board rather than just capital. With the Colossa WomenFirst Fund deploying from a INR 100 crore first close towards a INR 500 crore target, pre-Series A and growth-stage women-first startups in healthtech, fintech, climate and consumer have a dedicated, cheque-ready counterpart.
