CIE — the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at IIIT Hyderabad (cie.iiit.ac.in) is a DST-approved technology business incubator set up in 2008 inside one of India's most research-intensive tech institutes. It is widely regarded as India's largest academic deep-tech incubator, and it has been an open incubator — admitting non-IIIT start-ups — since 2011.
Sectors and scale
CIE backs deep-tech start-ups across AI, AR/VR, robotics, machine learning, computer vision, NLP and medtech (including its Ojas Medtech track) plus social tech, with programmes spanning pre-incubation to acceleration and investor pitch days. Its official site reports 400+ start-ups facilitated, 10,000+ entrepreneurs engaged, ₹6 crore invested across 30 start-ups, 2,500+ jobs created, 800Cr+ in portfolio valuation and 37+ start-up/research-lab engagements.
Capital and exits
CIE operates a seed fund through the IIIT-H Foundation and was awarded a ₹5 crore grant under the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme (announced December 2021) — offering up to ₹25 lakh per start-up and targeting 20–25 start-ups over three years. In 2021 four of its portfolio companies — Revos, Instoried, Paymatrix and Scholr — exited, returning 4x multiples on CIE's equity.
Avishkar accelerator
Its flagship Avishkar accelerator is a six-month, cohort-based deep-tech programme run twice a year, offering seed funding of up to ₹10 lakh (earlier cohorts offered up to ₹40 lakh jointly with SucSeed Indovation Fund). The 2026 Summer Cohort selected 5 start-ups from 110+ applications; earlier Avishkar alumni include Fabulyst, Sastra Robotics, Endless Robotics, Hirex.ai and WebNyay. CIE also supports DST, MeitY TIDE, NIDHI-PRAYAS, BIRAC BioNEST and iHUB-Data schemes, and offers cloud credits, prototyping and research-lab access.
Leadership
Prof P. J. Narayanan is Director of IIIT Hyderabad and Prof Ramesh Loganathan serves as COO of CIE.
Beyond Avishkar, CIE runs Ojas Medtech and Mediatech accelerators, Product Labs, start-up bootcamps and entrepreneurship courses for students — and it plugs founders into a remarkable stack of public schemes: DST (TBI), MeitY TIDE, NIDHI and NIDHI-PRAYAS, BIRAC BioNEST, NITI Aayog, AIC-IIITH, iHUB-Data and the Startup India Seed Fund. Practical support includes cloud credits (listed on the Avishkar page), prototyping and research-lab access, and mentoring by IIIT Hyderabad professors.
The 2026 Summer Cohort of Avishkar — 5 start-ups selected from 110+ applications — and alumni like Fabulyst, Sastra Robotics, Endless Robotics, Hirex.ai, CometLabs, Embedsense and WebNyay underline the programme's selectivity. With ₹6 crore already invested across 30 start-ups and a ₹5 crore Startup India Seed Fund grant deploying up to ₹25 lakh per venture, CIE pairs academic depth with real cheque-writing capacity.
Why it matters for founders
Deep-tech founders often need research infrastructure more than demo-day theatrics. CIE gives you an institute's labs, a seed fund that has actually returned 4x exits, and an accelerator (Avishkar) with a genuine deep-tech filter — plus eligibility for a stack of government grants most founders never hear about.
