Long before the solo-capitalist era went mainstream, Raymond Tonsing was doing it. He founded Caffeinated Capital in San Francisco and built it into a firm defined by a single promise to founders: lifetime partnership. The firm leads seed and Series A rounds and keeps investing "throughout the life of technology companies," backing the same founders repeatedly from first cheque to growth rounds rather than handing them off at the next stage.
Tonsing ran the firm alone for years before bringing on Varun Gupta — who had led data science and machine learning at Affirm — as a second general partner in 2020, alongside partner Matthew Volosin. The strategy is concentrated and relationship-driven: fewer, deeper bets, with partners who commit to thinking in decades rather than fund cycles. Its stated philosophy is an alternative to venture's hype cycle: "the luxury of long-term thinking."
On capital, the trajectory has been steep. According to TechCrunch's January 2025 reporting on a regulatory filing, Caffeinated is raising $400 million for its fifth fund, with $160 million already raised from 69 backers at the time of the filing — set to be the firm's largest capital haul. PitchBook data estimated the firm's fourth fund at roughly $209 million. Earlier vehicles include a $75 million third fund.
The portfolio explains why LPs keep writing bigger cheques. Caffeinated was an early investor in Airtable — co-leading the seed and leading through Series F — and in Affirm, which went public in 2021. Other flagship bets include defence startup Saronic, space company Varda Space Industries, nuclear startup Antares Industries, Onebrief, CloudTrucks, Virta, Federato and Aven. The exit ledger includes A/B testing company Optimizely, which PitchBook estimates sold for around $600 million in 2020.
Sectors span consumer tech, enterprise, healthcare, fintech, insurtech, crypto, climate tech, space tech and defence tech. The firm's edge with founders is continuity: it does not drop companies between stages, and its team page even features a Caffeinated Scout programme, run by staff at portfolio companies, to keep deal flow close to where builders actually work.
Why it matters for founders
Caffeinated is built for founders who want one lead investor for the whole journey, not a different partner every round. Its willingness to keep writing cheques from seed to IPO — and its track record of riding winners like Airtable and Affirm all the way — makes it a strong target for ambitious first cheques. With a $400 million fifth fund in the market, it is deploying at scale.
